I was sure a new thread had started for Movies 2023 but searching only found a July 2022 post as the last on the 2022 list. Apologies if this has already been started.

Anyway, my fwb with the incredible mammaries and I caught a matinee at Tinsel Town before a planned later afternoon and evening fun time. Our movie choice maybe was not the best to set up the later in the day interlude but I have to honestly say it has been a LONG time since I saw a movie with the impact of this one.

The Whale
No special effects other than the makeup/costume, no violence, no guns, very minimal cast but wow, talk about performances.
Brendan Fraser really does do the performance of his lifetime in this one. If he doesn't win, well ... he should win an oscar for this.
Hong Chau supports and is outstanding, so supporting role oscar there.
Its shot in 4:3 which sets the dark tone of the topic and reflects the life in this grotty apartment, maybe the life this guy lives.
It hits on a lot of topics of beliefs, on grief, loss. I felt it just HITS.

As I noted this is not the movie to preclude a hot date where you are getting jiggy, and in fact Ms Magnificent Breasts and I opted to having a quiet evening, but if I think back of movies that HIT ME in the past maybe the only other film that left me unable to speak for quite awhile after, was the mid 80's flick about Steve Biko and the injustice of Apartheid in South Africa.

I saw M3gan recently. It was supposed to be rated R but it went viral after the first trailer went out so they edited it down and reshot some stuff. It was still an entertaining flick. Pontificates about grief and loss, with some occasional chills from a killer robot doll. Hope they release a R rated cut on home video.

Currently halfway through Jung_E on netflix, its a sci fi movie but its different from what I was expecting.

My favorite movies I've seen in the past couple of months:

1) The Northman (Basically, it's "Skyrim: The Movie")
2) Everything Everywhere All At Once (a mix of 'Rick and Morty', and 'Kung Fu Hustle')
3) Amsterdam (High Brow comedy, akin to a Coen Bros movie like "O Brother, Where Art Thou"; A-list actors everywhere, even DeNero)
4) Bullet Train (it's like "Smokin' Aces", but on a train, with Brad Pitt)
5) Top Gun: Maverick (Just like the first movie, but without that 80's cheese, way better)

Red State. From 2010, I think. Kevin Smith movie. (Clerks/Mallrats/Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back). If you like Kevin Smith movies, or hate KS movies, this is still a good watch. Three horny teens think they're about to get laid by a MILF found on the internet. They are actually being set up and kidnapped by a religious cult based on Westboro Baptist Church. Quite violent.

To Leslie - The tiny, unwatched movie that scored Anddrea Riseborough a Best Actress nomination. She's amazingly good, and deserves not only the nomination, but should win. She's way better than the fave to win Winslett, in the predictable, pedestrian Tar.

My son and I watched RRR last Friday. I won’t watch a foreign film with out a recommendation so I frankly haven’t seen many. That said, I loved this film. Highly entertaining and I laughed so hard I could barely breath. One of the best films I’ve seen in a couple years.

Sounds like I need to make an effort to see The Whale, Megan and Everything Everywhere at once👍

if you have a female in your life who thinks she's a queen, take her to Tar. It'll take her down a notch Cate Blanchett.

I saw the recent Avatar film in theatres. It was alright. The kind of film to see in a theatre in 3D though.

The Northman was good. I like those sort of films.

Also saw everything Everywhere All At Once but not in theatres. It was alright. I like Michelle Yeoh, but I thought some of the film was predictable.

Also watched this oldie: Candyman.

a Man called Otto...Tom Hanks is brilliant as a curmudgeonly old bugger who gradually lets people get close to him.

Plane.....gerard Butler in an action movie, shooting it out in rebel-infested southern Philippines.

all Quiet on the Western Front.latest telling of this anti-war tale, very well done.

curious to see Babylon, but 3 hrs...dunno.

All Quiet on the Western Front was really quite good. It's very disturbing what those kids lived through
I disliked Avatar immensely
Plane was ridiculous escapism and fun
Green Book was awesome. Enjoyed the story and I thought the acting was great.

Just saw Infinity Pool, from director Brandon Cronenberg. Its about a couple who vacations in a fictional country with barbaric practices. When one of them breaks the law, they find out with enough money they can circumvent punishment with a bribe. The lead ends up going down a path of depravity. Sci fi thriller with a tinge of horror. I really liked it and recommend it. (Plot details kept vague on purpose, go in blind if you can)

Maverick didn't work for me. Good film, planes etc.and no Hollywood woke; but really didn't see the connection between Maverick and the Bar owner...That romance was flat!?

Got talked into going to "Living", purported as Bill Nighy's performance of a lifetime.
It's good no question and as a dramatic actor, he does a great job, but as entertainment, perhaps applying pickling paint and watching it dry might be a better choice.

I saw "The Woman King" yesterday, and that was decent. You don't see a lot of Hollywood dramas about Africans and their historical empires. (Wakanda doesn't count.)

saw Marlowe..it was ok, but not film-noir like TCM.
Liam Neeson is good but he's not Bogart or Mitchum.
