Saw Dead Pool 2 yesterday. Very funny, though I felt the early part was disjointed and a bit rough. What I loved in there, though, was Russell, the 14 year old from New Zealand. I think his inclusion went over the heads of most of the audience and reviewers/critics as well. You need to know something about New Zealand film. All I will say is, look for Hunt for the Wilderpeople... and then you will appreciate the inclusion of Russell.

Red Sparrow

Not as good as I would have liked it to be. I read somewhere that it is based on a novel written by a guy who was some sort of spy himself.

Visually appealing but I found no chemistry between lead lady (Jennifer Lawrence) and lead guy. It seemed unnecessarily long and sex and gory violence seemed to have been forced into the movie. Seems like the director wanted to prove over and over again that sex is used in the world of espionage!

Not a bad film but it seemed to go on for a bit too long despite good acting (and beautiful body of) Jennifer Lawrence.
2.5 out of 5.

Strange the complaints that you had about the story and the chemistry between the character is exactly what the director was trying to show.
She was not a willing partisapent in becomeing a spy. She was forced into it and was always on the edge of being a eliminated if she made a mistake or her plan was figured out.

I did not see the twist coming ,but it was for shadowed by some of the things she did earlier. I figured she was going to get her revenge some how .

I see your point very well. Very interesting!!Yes I had a feeling there will be some twist at the end and she was going to take her revenge,-as you said.

It's nice to see movies like Red Sparrow and Atomic Blonde with strong female lead parts. Both movies were highlights for me in the theatre this year.

Nothing against the 4 Bourne movies which followed Ludlum's formula quite well. It's good to have a change. I did read Ludlum's books back in the day and had hoped they would be on screen at some time. It's probably best to have someone like Matt Damon vs someone from the 80's or 90's who would come across like a Bond wannabe.

BTW Atomic Blonde's soundtrack is amazing if you put on headphones and crank it up. They used period piece rock etc very well IMO.

right here and now
Was fairly hung over on Sunday and needed some afternoon filler as I started to fade.
Picked the Jhumanji remake. WTF. $7 from Netflix
Fun little flick.
The Rock as the avatar to a 16 year old gamer geek and Jack Black as avatar of a teen drama queen. JB steals it IMO.
Pretty funny stuff if you just want a clean escape and not much mental effort..

Also, I recently watched A Quiet Place. Believe the hype (I think around 95% on rotten tomatoes last time I looked). It's REALLY good. Great sound design, which is a key component for this film.

Caught it over the weekend. I kept on putting it off because horror is not really my thing and especially I can not see children in distress (because of being a dad myself, I think) and that is why I never saw IT (2017).

Anyways, I found A Quiet Place very good too. It's not really a horror movie as it turned out, it is more of a creature feature with an eerie feeling to it. It's about a family of five trying to survive invasion by these creatures that can not see but still have extra sensitive hearing abilities. Because the family can not make any sound so there are few lines spoken, as you can imagine but the movie moves very briskly and it keeps you gripped. I think the movie also works very well on human and compassion level. It shows resistance and resilience shown by the family despite the grief. Although there is really not much suspense, I still don't want to give too much away just in case you want to watch it.

Scene with the old man is short but says a lot. Emily Blunt is very good (I think she is beautiful!) and so is Millicent Simmonds as the daughter and the oldest child. The director himself plays the husband very well and his expressions say a lot. I have to admit that I fast forwarded thru some scenes because I just can not bring myself to watch kids in distress.

Absolutely recommended.

Just saw Deadpool 2, got to ask what was the point of the Japanese girl who was a lesbian. To prove Japanese women fit the sterotype that are sex toy for white people??

Daylight (2011)

While browsing a free online movies site, Daylight caught my eye. I checked Rotten Tomatoes and they rated it 91% so I watched it.

A European couple gets kidnapped in America. The wife is pregnant and we have a thriller on our hands. Although the genre is quite common, the movie is not. Its slow boil pace and sharp visuals make the movie stand out.

The acting is superb and the music and direction are very impressive. The lead lady, (also one of the writers) Alexandra Meierhans, speaks with a European accent and for some reason I kept thinking of Ms Beatrice, one of my ATF. She has this face that seems so ordinarily beautiful. The whole movie has a rich visual tone and I loved watching it.

It’s tense and not very long either. I strongly recommend it to those who like crime thrillers with a difference.
4/5 stars

T8E

Edit: It should've been European, not European, my bad.

I have also seen Deadpool 2 and Solo in succession. I though Solo was pretty good, easily the best Star Wars film of the most recent incarnations. Deadpool 2 had some laughs but honestly, it's Van Wilder as a superhero. Not very compelling at all.

I rented Game Night. It lost my attention about half way through it.

I felt the same way although I did end up finishing it. Initially it was snappy and wit was good, but about half way in it turned into a a slap stick average attempt at physical humor.

The cast was good, started out well but like you say the physical humour took over.

In the end I was cheering for the gangsters to finish these people off.

The Cop next door was funny. Can't remember his name but recalled he was on Breaking Bad's final season.
