Health nurse,
Does mouthwash help.... After dfk, daty or Dato ?
Can it prevent certain stds?

I understand that brushing teeth before or right after is not good because it can cause bleeding or cuts to your gums that would allow infection.

For freshness I always use mouthwash before a session, many SP's also have it available.

Is rinsing right after the session helpful? And is there a particular brand you recommend .

Thanks very much, WCJ .

Hi westcoastjoe

We still recommend not brushing your teeth just before sex because of the things that you mention.

I had this question a few years ago on PERB and I was able to get an answer from an oral surgeon. I will re-post the answer that was given to me.

Hi all

I have been able to get in touch with an oral surgeon in regard to the use of mouthwash in preventing sexually transmitted infections.

His said mouthwash is not helpful in preventing sexually transmitted infections.

The reason being is that mouthwash is useful in killing “mouth” bacteria, not bacteria that occurs in other areas of the body. It also does not kill a virus.

Another point he brought up was that if you use mouthwash to much (more than 5 times per day) you will start to see damage to the mouth tissue. This damage could result in more of a risk.

He also recommended not using mouthwash prior to oral sex as it would be possible to “burn” the skin of the penis. The “burn” could occur with even just one use.

If you want to give your mouth a rinse it is probably better just to use plain water.

Given the above information it might be better to use a breath mint rather than a mouth wash depending on how many times you need to use it and your personal preference.
