This GM has to get fired before he screws up the Kesler trade. This guy can't draft He can't trade. He can't handle personnel. I can't believe we had the best one, two goalies a few years ago that won the Jennings trophy. We end up trading both for one first rounder, a third liner and a prospect which could be more like a suspect.

He's hires Tortorella and his coaching style doesn't mix with the current group of players. Overplaying the top 6 and now they have nothing left in the tank. I won't buy anymore tickets unless this clown is fired. He should stick to being a player agent.

I've gotta agree that he messed up the Schneider trade, badly. In Luongo though, yes, they didn't get much but I think their goal was more to get him off their books and they (mostly) succeeded there.

I'm not yet convinced that Tortorella is a significant part of the problem here though.

The Upside

He is better than No Trade Nonis

The downside IMHO is he should have been tossed to the curb and not allowed to fire Coach V. Torts is out of his league because the only reason he won a Stanley Cup was because of all the good players he had to use. Not because of his coaching tactics.

I sense we true Canuck fans will be Knashing our teeth for years now. This is reminiscent of when Mike Keenan came to town. What a huge kluster fuck that was!!!

Bring on a true Hockey Professional like Ken Holland and give him a free leash to build a winner.

What Vancouver needs, and not just the Canucks, but the city is a GM that will create a young exciting team and who continues to improve that team through the years.

The Canucks were that team back when we first acquired Luongo, but even after the Stanley Cup Finals, they stayed that same team and finally faded away into today's version. We need a GM who will continuously strive to improve the team, replacing older players with new younger players. Take the NFL for example, draft your team.

This so called rebuild shouldn't take 6 to 8 years, but rather a year or two like the Colorado Avalanche. In order to make this happen, we need to work on our scouting and look at improving the farm system. I'm not even sure who our up and coming stars are at this point.

Trevor Linden available for GM??? Can Vancouver ever hate him???

The fact he didn't trade Kesler screws things up. By the time Kesler will now get traded, he's going to be a 30 in his final year of a contract. Probably won't get full value for him.

EDIT: Doug Maclean just mentioned that a Pittsburgh reporter claims the reason why Kesler didn't get traded to Pittsburgh is because Aquilini nixed it. If Aquilini has behind some of the questionable moves Gillis has made, we may need to cut Gillis some slack.

There's totally some stupidity coming from the Aquilini's - they probably set a ridiculous price for Kes so that no one would bite. Aquilini's think a playoff run is still possible while Gillis wants to ditch the fat and rebuild. Aquilini's clearly don't have the hockey smarts to own a winning team. They turfed Nonis who was actually a good guy (Brian Burke's understudy if you will). Tort's has a history of turning great offensive players into shot blockers.

On a good note, ticket prices are going down down down! Check stubhub lately. I can see a Nucks game vs the best team in the league in April for 41 bucks.
Use to be in the 60s for a game in April.

feel bad for Eddie. I hope he now realizes what No.1 entails.
he's going to have to work extra hard in the summer if he thinks he can play
the 60-65 games a season and keep a winning %.

tonight's game was pretty brutal! the body language speaks volume.
no urgency and the grip for that final playoff spot is loosening.
yup, it's going to be a long road to contention.

and my final thought on the Lu debacle, since there's no use moping–

Lu made it look effortless (4 straight seasons of 30+wins) because he had the goods.
I really am sorry to see him go and be mistreated the last couple of years. even loyal fans turned on him…
and since it's the month of March, it's only appropriate to quote 'Et tu Brute'?

take the millions of dollar payday aside, we keep forgetting that these pro athletes have breaking points,
just like the rest of us. some handle it with more class than others and I think that's how
Lu carried on the last 2 years.

I give him props for having CHARACTER and I wish him well with the Panthers.
they seem to have a young team that's on the upswing, it's just too bad it's not a hockey-crazy city.
but I'm guessing Lu will welcome the sight of an anemic post-game scrum.

and now, the search for a No.1 begins.

Nonis - http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/nonis-history-of-moves-vancouver-canucks/
Gillis - http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/nhl-trade-deadline-gms/
more on Gillis, read the headlines - http://www.sportsnet.ca/?s=gillis+history+of+moves

I haven't look at all the details of all the trades but from what I have seen it doesn't look like they have traded all their draft picks away. If anyone doubts they are in full rebuild mode now just keep watching the players play for a coaching reassignment. If it were me Torts would be gone before the end of the season - have Gillis come down and coach so they can get rid of him too. Sign Lou to a contract that is untradeable and then pay to move him, that can't be good for the resume. Trade Schnieder for a sack of pucks because he mismanaged things so badly he had too. Now their goaltending is Lacking. And the team is throwing Lack under the bus because they won't play for Torts. Hodgson for Kassian - WTF was that, because Boston pushed the Canucks around. Let Naslund and Morrison go as UFAs. Signed Sundin, hahahahaha, that was fricken funny for every other team in the league. 1 year at $8.6M for Sundin. There had to be a lot of crack around Vancouver in those days. More UFAs slip away for nothing.

Gillis has been bad but there was and is talent. Getting them to play is something Torts can't do.

Gilis will be fired the day after the regular season ends.

Kesler will be moved at the draft for not that much by the new GM.

Torts will get one season with the new guy to try to turn it around. Hopefully, this new GM will get some players more suited to Torts style of coaching.

I hope you Canucknuckleheads like retro because it will be the 1980s all over again for a time only this time 27 wins won't get them into the playoffs.

Do you believe him?

http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2014/03/mike-gillis-letter-canucks-season-ticket-holders/

With the trade deadline a week behind us, I wanted to communicate directly with our Season Ticket Members. You are a very important part of the Canucks family, and I’d like to give you more insight into last week’s developments and our plan for the team going forward.

In addition, I will be inviting you to participate in a webcast after I get home from the GM meetings and upcoming road trip. I want to articulate our plans with you openly and want to give you an opportunity to ask questions so that you have a greater understanding of the vision.

Our mission remains the same: to win the Stanley Cup. Last summer we said we had to make some changes to our team. We need to get younger, faster and stronger to succeed. That process is happening now, as we look to retool by surrounding our veteran stars with new, young talent. You can look at Anaheim as a recent example of a team that has retooled successfully.

Trading Roberto was not an easy decision. We are grateful for his tremendous contribution to our team and city, and we wish him much success. But the moves we’ve made go beyond goaltending. We are now younger and we are getting deeper. We’ve added a big, strong 6’4″ centre in Shawn Matthias, who is excited to be here and will help this team now. And we believe in our talented group of prospects, including Bo Horvat, Nicklas Jensen, Frank Corrado, Dane Fox, Brendan Gaunce and Hunter Shinkaruk, who will be part of our short and long-term success. We are also well positioned financially, having created over $5 million in cap room to make the right deals for this team. That’s in addition to the $7 million we expect the salary cap to increase next season.

We approached the deadline with long-term success in mind. We were prepared to make a hockey deal on trade deadline day, not a short-term fix. The players offered at the deadline did not fit our vision of where we want our team to go. We need to get younger and more balanced to be more competitive, and we didn’t see the right players to accomplish that goal. We are not willing to compromise our long-term vision for the sake of change.

We are committed to putting a winning team on the ice for you. Our ownership is supportive and will invest whatever it takes to bring the Cup to Vancouver. As we move towards this goal we will continue to invest in your arena and Canucks fan experience.

Thank you again for your continued support. We are enduring a challenging period, but your passion makes it possible for us to put our team in a position to compete. Our organization is committed to doing whatever it takes to win, and we want you to be here with us when we achieve our goal.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Gillis
President and General Manager

Why not Ron Hextall who has been in the LA Organization? Or former GM of Buffalo who didn't get a fair chance to rebuild. Any of those two would be better than Gillis. Maybe even Pierre McGuire of TSN
