Thinking of heading to Mexico during spring break. I have never been there and this is a family trip. So:

1. Which destination is the best in Mexico with beaches, entertainment (for kids as well as adults) .
2. Is March a good time to go?
3. Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

take,

mexico is a pretty big country that spans quite a few climate zones

basically the weather on the caribbean side is quite distinct from the pacific side

the pacific side has a dry season from november-ish to april-ish. by april things are pretty dry and arid. the rest of the year is the rainy season, meaning sunny mornings clouding over by noon, raining buckets by 2, clearing by 4 and clear all night. the rain is warm so it's not all that bad

the caribbean side is more 'tropical' and has a number of slightly wetter/dryer months

then there is the north to south variation

northern mexico is definitely colder in winter, warmer in summer. basically the hottest day of the year is the summer solstice in june, the coldest the winter solstice in december. mazatlan in december is quite cool - sweater weather at nights, and the gulf of california (sea of cortez) is downright chilly due to the ice cold colorado river draining into it

then there is the elevation variation. the central (east-west speaking) part of the country is coolish in winter, especially in the north

so do a bit more google research on the various cities around the country and you should be able to pick the 'right' time of year for each one

keep in mind that when the mexicans go on holiday, it is like a herd migration - you won't be getting any accomodations, and the beaches will be very overcrowded

also look up and avoid the hurricane seasons

take8easy....been to Mexico many times. I may be making a couple of assumptions, but are you looking for all-Inclusive type resorts/areas? There are pro's and con's to most vacation destinations in Mexico, depending on what you're looking for...As an example, if you're looking for more authentic Mexico, look at going farther south on the Pacific side....Maybe Ixtapa or Manzanillo. The issue here is the farther south or east you go, the longer the travel time and if you're going for only a week, you're giving up a day travelling back and forth.
We like San Jose Del Cabo, due to short travel time (been in SJDC in a little under 4 hr. out of Vancouver) and weather. However, due to the American Influence, this area is less authentic Mexico. Cabo San Lucus is a party destination, whereas SJDC tends to be a little quieter if you are travelling with a family. Another benefit is SJDC is only 10-15 minutes from the Airport.
Looking at the east coast, Cancun proper is a modern city, and again, less authentic Mexico. Also, Cancun is a spring break destination for University / College kids and it can get fairly crazy there in March. Riviera Maya, south of Cancun has great beaches and many fabulous resorts...if your budgets not an issue. Also, the farther south you go (South of Playa Del Carmen), maybe Tulum, the more you get into the Mayan ruins and culture. If you're into scuba diving or snorkeling, then maybe Cozumel should be your destination.
On balance, I'd suggest Puerto Vallarta. It has a little bit of everything. Plus, if you get an early flight time, you could be in your resort by mid-afternoon, same day. I'd suggest any resort along Riviera Nayarit (about 20 minute north of the airport). Try looking at Tripadvisor for user feedback on the various resorts. Many of the resorts cater to families and have Kids Clubs where you can drop-off you kids in the morning and pick them up in the later afternoon. Your kids supervised all day and most have planned activities. I know a few resorts have mini-water parks for the kids.... I know my grandkids keep asking me when we're going back to Mexico..they had a blast! If you're on a budget, look at the Royal Decameron in Bucerias SIC (about 20-25 minutes north of the Airport. The rooms are fairly basic, but again it has a little bit of everything (adult pools/family pools, activities, etc.) and the evening entertainment is family orientated.
To close, do your research, and being March, watch out for the spring breakers!

We've been to the Riu in Los Cabos three times and love it there. Food is good, nice and clean, good service, lots to do, perfect for families and close to town.

How old are your children?

Some places are all about drunken partying, others are much more family oriented. Last place I stayed was mostly condos owned by Mexicans and Europeans, kids would be bored to death. Good for an old guy like me though.

Barcelo hotels are full of drunk party animals in my experience. I actually left one and moved to another hotel because it was packed with idiot 'Murrican kids.

Not sure what you're looking for but if an all inclusive beach resort is your thing I highly recommend the Barceló Maya resports http://www.barcelo.com/BarceloHotels/en_US/hotels/mexico/riviera-maya/hotels-riviera-maya.aspx
Been there with the family during Spring Break and it wasn't crazy. There are 4 different resorts "sharing" the same compound, all at different price points depending on your budget. There are activities for all age levels. We had a ton of fun. Also the location permits easy excursions to the ruins, snorkeling, etc....

i have owned and built houses all over mexico for 30 yrs...
built in cabo before it is what it is todya... expensive
built in Guadalajara areas
built PV
built San Miguel de Allende
i suggest for a family to probably do Puerto Valarta for a first timer with kids..
if more experienced and can speak some spanish then i would go further south ...
PV will do the trick just fine... find a all inclusive deal or if on a budget get a cool little place off the beach with a kitchenette and go to old food market and buy breaky /lunch stuff and save a few bucks...lots to do and pretty safe for tourists...have fun.
