Recently, a dispute between Mainland visitors and Hong Kong residents caused by Mainland visitors eating on a Hong Kong MTR train was captured on video. Video was then viewed extensively on the Internet and caused heated discussions amongst Hong Kong and Mainland netizens.

This video captured the incident happened on January 15, 2012, on a Hong Kong MTR (Mass Transit Railway) East Rail line train departing from Hung Hom, Hong Kong to Luohu, Shenzhen, Guangdong. Carrying their luggage, eight Mainland visitors including children were departing from Hong Kong. 30-year-old Hong Kong resident Mr. Wei and his girlfriend were on the same train.

A Mainland mother poured some dried instant noddle onto her daughter’s hands, the little girl started to eat the noodle from her hands, during which some noodle spilled onto the floor. Because eating and drinking are not allowed on the MTR, Mr. Wei spoke to them in not so standard Mandarin, “I am sorry, you can not eat here.”

Due to the video only captured when after the shouting had started; also when one MTR staff was brought to the scene, no one knew what had happened before. Mr. Wei stated on the Internet on January 17, “After I told them, the kid stopped eating, however the mother accused me of making trouble. Her companions also laughed at my bad Mandarin, said they couldn’t even understand.”

Mr. Wei when interviewed by Xinhua News Agency reporter on January 18 admitted his Mandarin was not good, but at the time he could not stand how the other party made fun of it. “I suddenly was so furious, that was looking down on me, disrespecting me.” Mr. Wei yelled back in Cantonese, his girlfriend also joined the fight.

Some Hong Kong passengers tried to stop them, saying the Mainland visitors did something wrong and also started yelling and asked the MTR staff to resolve the dispute. Then, the MTR staff came to learn about the situation. The little girl said, “Mother should be at fault.” “It’s all my fault.” Finally the MTR staff asked both parties to get off the train at the third stop to resolve the disputes.

Caption:

Mainland woman: Just tell us clearly, right? Not a big deal.
Hong Kong woman: It is not a big deal, but even it is a small thing, it is still not good.
Mainland woman: Not good, we know now, isn’t it enough? What else do you want?
??: Don’t fight, no use arguing with them.
Hong Kong woman: Tell them all to get off the train.
Hong Kong man: We are not afraid of wasting time.
Hong Kong man to staff: They are eating noddle here, spilling all over the place. I told them you can not eat on the train.
Mainland woman to staff: Because children just got on the train and the children don’t know.
Hong Kong man to staff: Then they started yelling. This is Hong Kong.
Little girl: Mom should be at fault, sister.
Hong Kong man to staff: We told them can not eat here. Then they started yelling at us. You should ticket them.
Staff: Which of you will apologize.
Mainland woman: sorry (in English)
Staff: Don’t say sorry to me.
Hong Kong Man: Speaking English sorry, so smart!.
Mainland woman: I don’t understand Cantonese.
Staff to Mainland woman: Are these yours? Get off the train in a moment.
Hong Kong man: Ok I don’t have a problem.
Staff: Are you all together?
Mainland woman: I don’t understand.
Staff: (in Mandarin) How many of you? Get off next stop.
Mainland woman: Ok, get off.
Staff: We do not allowing eating here.
Mainland woman A: let me explain.
Mainland woman B: please let her explain.
Mainland woman A: we just got on the train, the children do not know, I stopped her right the way.
Staff: OK get off next stop.
Little girl: Not my fault.
Mainland woman to little girl: not your fault, not your fault.
Hong Kong man: I saw adults were also eating, you should be punished.
Mainland woman B: I didn’t know.
Mainland woman: Please stop.
Hong Kong man: Get off together, do not need to talk to them, all Mainland people are like this. Get off.
Mainland woman: Curse you to death after we get off!

Bloody Locusts, Mainland Chinese are everywhere. Now they have some money they are invading North America, Europe, Australia, UK. I wish all of them would buy a one way ticket to BC and stay there.

Glad I got that off my chest.

Uh...don't get me started on the Mainlander vs Hong Kong thing. They keep spreading everywhere and thry are all rude and stuck up.

I remember my last visit to Hong Kong, I went to a Dim Sum place and all the waitresses there were Mainlanders. I remember some people causing a scene because the waitress knee no Cantonese and the old patrons knew no Mandarin. Each were yelling at each other to learn each others language.

I work in the service industry in Canada and I absolutely hate how accommodating we are to Mainlanders. Everyone of them always wants to be serviced in Mandarin. They would literally insult me for not knowing Mandarin and if we aren't able to accommodate them they freak out. I just want to fucking tell them to learn English. At least more Cantonese people are willing to learn a functional level of English.

I'm CBC and I have plenty of friends who are Mainland Chinese and we're all mortified at how a lot of Mainlanders act. No class, disgusting habits (defecating in public, spitting on floors), just inconsiderate and rude in general.

I confess. Sometimes i eat on the bus. I know i'm not suppose to but sometimes i'm in hurry and have no time to eat. Although i do try to keep the food as lowkey as possible eg.no messy foods and liquids.

I found this to be an interesting read: about the struggles that the educational system encounters, regarding heavily multi-cultured student bodies, the conflicts therein, and the educators attempts at bringing understanding to the conflicting cultures.

Discrimination happens on so many levels; humans seem to have this built-in need to prove their superiority over one another. "My way is better than your way."

This bugs me with people from any ethnic group who move to Canada and refuse to learn English. How can you expect to function in a foreign country if you don't learn the language?
What bugs me even more is those groups demanding that WE change our policies because they don't agree with them... ummm... we were here first, mofo's... if Christmas offends you, then GTFO....

What he said...and some of you will also remember this change, which was made in order to accommodate another culture's attire into the Canadian system?

Little girl: Not my fault.
Mainland woman to little girl: not your fault, not your fault.
Actually the little girl said "should be mother's fault" but was quickly shushed by another mainland woman.

There are a lot of resentments in Hong Kong about the mainland, this is the result of those resentments.

Well that is the result of 50+ years of Hong Kong being ruled by the British government.....the people in Hong Kong got it pretty cushy compared to the mainland residents of China and it is a culture shock since the handover of Hong Kong to the PRC from Britain.

Personally I think it is pretty fucking stupid....in comparison me getting pissed off at a Quebecer who says something in english that is not phoenetically correct is just as stupid.

For fuck sakes China has the largest population on this 3rd rock from the sun and despite Chairman Mao's best intention to make Mandarin the standard language Cantonese AKA "village speak" is alive and still spoken due to both the mass of population of the country as well as the disparity between those that live in the country and those that live in the cities....the financial disparities are an even bigger gap.

Personally I take no notice or offence if a young tasty Chinese gal at my fave micro speaks bad english or none at all.....not that she cant talk whilst sucking my dick LOL.

Straight up this is one thing and one thing only...class warfare in China and the issue is the disparity between speaking Mandarin and Cantonese.

That's a pretty good take on things SR. There's always been a great North South divide in China. The Southerners (mostly Cantonese speakers) have always viewed the Northerners as the invaders. Consequently, the Northererners have never trusted the Southerners. What do you think the Southerners felt when Cantonses was narrowly beaten by Madarin to be used as the universal dialect in China? The divide between HK citizens and the mainlanders are even greater due to HK citizens' century old exposure to Western civilization.

it's not the immigrants or their children that are against us celebrating Christmas, it's the goddam white liberal Christian apologists living out their guilt complexes that are banning Christmas everywhere. and the friggin' media is not far behind, they know that a good story about trying to shame Christmas will sell because of the outraged Christians - what a bloody sham!

i liked it in indonesia - they called a holiday for EVERY religion. they are jokingly referred to as Chris-lems

ever notice that we get statutory holidays for Christmas and new years, but for chinese new year we only get teachers' professional days? same thing for ramadan? hell, i don't mind other cultures celebrating their sacred days and holdays - but call it what it is and declare a stat, don't hide it behind teachers' pro days...

Truthfully, the aboriginals were here first. We came in, demanded they change their way of life, give up their land, and conform to our way of doing things...

But karma happens. In maybe 200 years, we (da white folk) will be the new aboriginals, and the Chinese will be imposing their way and lifestyles on us, and we won't be able to do a fucking thing about it.

Karma's a bitch, yo.

Mandarin is already the most widely spoken language in the world.

In 50 years, the biggest English speaking country in the world will be China.

In 100 years, the biggest English speaking country in the world will be India.

However, the odds that the human race will survive into the next century due to natural or man-made disasters, WW-III, etc. is about 50/50.
