Visited a couple of places in Brisbane. They are all away from the downtown area so you have to take a cab. First was a ery well appointed establishment. You go up the stairs and each lady introduces herself in turn. I selected a mi-thrities lady and off we went. First hour was in a room with a four poster bed and wet bar! Had an attended shower, then went at on 800 thread Egyption cotton sheets. With Monets and Van Goghs on the wall looking on. When I finally cried "Uncle" she let me loose and went off to get another glass of champagne. Dammit, wouldn't yunno, Mr Happy decides to point at the ceiling again! She comes back this and sees this and starts to laugh! I told her I need to buy another hour, badly, and she says" Come with me". She takes me to another great theme room with a 6 seater hottub. We go at it on the nearby bed then jump into the hot tub. At the end, you hug goodbye and get into the first cab in the line-up outside the door. Toto, I don't think we're in Winnipeg anymore. This is Oz!

The problem with visiting German brothels (and much of Europe) is the issue of sex slavery. Eastern Europe is too often mined for pretty girls who are then entrapped. I know it is painting with a broad brush, but something that should not be overlooked if we truly want to see a legalized sex trade that is considered a career in our country.

So what's the deal for now? Are brothels only legal in Ontario? I thought the courts struck down the anti-bawdy house laws for all of Canada? I read that the courts are giving the Canadian govt. a year to appeal the decision. Does this mean brothels throughout the rest of Canada are still illegal until the appeal goes through? I need to know because I'm in Vancouver from time to time. And I'd love to visit a real brothel again. Haven't been to one in almost 4 years.
I am not a lawyer but here is my understanding.
As it stands if you opened in Ontario today what could be legally described as a brothel, "common bawdy house", you would likely not be charged there. And would never be charged unless the federal government 1) comes up with a legislated remedy that addresses the concerns of the Ontario courts (protection of vulnerable prostitutes) and still managed to outlaw bawdy houses, or 2) changed the Constitution (fat chance).
Although it technically does not apply to the rest of Canada, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruling would serve as powerful case law in other jurisdictions. If you were so brave, you could open a common bawdy house in, say, Estevan, Saskatchewan, let the local Mountie charge you with keeping a common bawdy house, then hire Alan Young (the lawyer who won in Ontario) to represent you. My guess is you would likely win in Saskatchewan, but the law is always a crap shoot.
If the matter is under appeal to the Supreme Court at the time you are charged, the Saskatchewan Crown may stay charges against you, hoping for a favourable Supreme Court decision before your 12 month stay expires and the charges are automatically dropped. Especially if your lawyer Alan Young is tied up with the appeal in Ottawa, the Crown would likely find it awkward to pursue you.
The govt may also appeal to the Supreme Court within the next 12 months, in order to keep things just the same. (A convenient approach that dodges legislative and public debate) If it loses, it's game on across Canada!
If the govt loses a Supreme Court appeal I suspect the situation will be a little chaotic as govts at all levels across Canada move to put a regulatory framework in place. Look for Winnipeg city council to be dazed, confused and disoriented when this happens.

Prostitution is illegal in Thailand but it is not thought of the same way, and legally defined much differently, as in Western society. So it has the best cathouses I have ever been in anywhere. The customer is treated like a king and the variety of services and beauty of women is astonishing. Local regulations and culture make it so. I find Anglo-Saxon culture particularly prudish (compare Quebec to the rest of Canada) and this weighs down the development of brothels, even in legal Brisbane.
For all practical purposes, local regulations, and the consequent attitude to enforcement, is more important than the actual law on the books.
