Ontario's Supreme Court yesterday legalized brothels. (Up for appeal). Should Manitoba follow? Personally I prefer the company of a "semi-legal" SP. Your thoughts?

First off, Ontario's ruling has no bearing on Manitoba. At this point the ruling in Ontario applies to only Ontario.
This is definitely going to go all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. It just has to go through all of the lower courts first.
Once the Supreme Court of Canada rules, then that ruling would apply to the entire country.
I wouldn't be getting my hopes up yet because this fight is not over yet and in the end the Conservatives could use their majority to rewrite the law to make brothels illegal. I hope like hell they don't but you never know. Between Bill C-30 and this, I might have to tear up my CPC membership card.

Wise words Jethro. I voted Tory in the last two fed elections. Likely I will not change my vote next time, regardless of this ruling. Prostitution is legal in Canada, as long as it is not solicited (I.E. negotiating a price for sexual services, or "living off the avails of".... but the law is very gray. I'm sure Holland went debate through parliamentary procedures once before, decades ago. I doubt if we will ever see red light districts like Amsterdam in Canadian cities. However, we are much more liberal to this subject in comparison to other countries such as the U.S.
It will likely go to the Supreme Court, which would clear things up here. If the decision holds and goes national, or if the feds re-write the law favourably, I see a potential business opportunity in Winnipeg :nod: Any investors out there?
The ruling simply strikes down the law that makes it illegal to operate or be in a a bawdy-house. The converse isn't true. It doesn't legalize them. You can only legally operate a brothel if the municipality or city in which it's located will grant a license to operate it. Until cities issue such licenses, it will still be illegal to run a brothel, although many cities turn a blind-eye to what's happening in licensed body-rub parlours. There is, though, one legal brothel in Vancouver. The license was granted over 40 years ago and the city has been trying to shut it down ever since. However, the owner isn't in contravention of any bylaws, so the place is still around.
One of our City councilman was on the radio today and stated that he would vote "Yes" to legalize a brothel in the City of Winnipeg
It would be nice if the city leaders would look at what is besr for Winnipeg from an economic standpoint instead of continually kowtowing to the BB.s after all the most robust economy in the United States is immediately to our south, they have to have their head in the sand not to be taking advantege of it
This is again, unfortunately, one of the issues in society where a small yet vocal group of people effectively lobby against something, while in reality the majority of people support changes. I certainly find in my daily life when the topic of legalizing prostitution has come up, most people including alot of women support it. Many of the people I've had conversations with believe as long as it involves consenting adults, who cares and it would provide safer conditions for the ladies and men in the industry.
Unfortuantely instead of listeneing to the public and changing the laws to not only allow it but toughening up penalties for those engaged in underage or forced prostitution, most politicians will continue to pander to the vocal minority.

I know but I just have a problem with alligning myself with political parties who would rather control every aspect of our lives and spend like drunken sailors on shore leave with little or no regard for the fact they are saddling us with unimaginable debt.

I don't foresee a true brothel happening in Canada anytime soon, however realisticly , I think that any MP currently in place will be able to conduct business on a more open basis , and hopefully will not be subjected to a team of 6-10 police descending on them every few months, with the threat to any client that is inside at the time that they they could be considered to be in a bawdy house, which is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE in Canada , which puts one in the same status as a murderer or a drug dealer. Many places who only offer " adult massage"...and provide limited service , will in all likelyhood become fs parlours...as right now...it is not legal for sex to occur in a "massage: establishment , and its illegal for girls to be naked in a massage establishment, So hopefully those rules would become ancient history.......for all intents and purposes , the fs massage places are brothels right now , albeit whats going on behind closed doors is not legal, and everyone turns a slightly blind eye to it, despite the raids that happen every couple months, where they go in like a swat team....gain entry to the building as sneaky as possible ... barge into the rooms.....and treat everyone like a criminal...( I know)...!Unfortunately it will add to the bearaucrcy , and with it some real stupid government rules, but in all likely hood , will give more women a safe place to work , and give men a place to go , with no risk of being caught/charged with being in a bawdy house.
