There are plenty of girls at my gym who can decimate guys a lot bigger than them because they took the time to train themselves instead of being a scared victim who will just go into shock and collapse when something goes wrong.
thoughts...

about leverage Archimedes once said, give me a long enough lever and I could move the world...

but also bear in mind there a lot of bigger guys that can decimate the men and women at your gym...

and if size is irrelevant why do they have weight classes in MMA...

skill does not always trump size...

training in self-defence certainly doesn't hurt, but it sure doesn't make you invincible...

and to Hubba...

if you want to read something well articulated, read thatotherguy's post...

again somewhat pedantic, but extremely informative...

It's nice that I'm always in your thoughts Hunny but really there is no need for you to inform me or give me your advice on matters. Stick to trying to be a better human being, instead of such a douche bag.

Just glad that you'r ok, and it's amazing what skiing can do for you! You did the right thing, calling the cops, etc. Never mind what the closet Bruce Lee's and Chuck Norris's think. Do for you what you believe will keep you safe. Chances of that happening again are quite remote, but it's always good to be vigilant.

Then I guess the other 9 out of 10 guys can thrash the girls? Or was decimate not the right word?

If you get a firearm for home defense, take a course, even if you have to go to the States. A properly taught shotgun home defense course will keep you safer from home invasion, and give you a solid grounding in how and when to use the weapon.

Well you're kind of an idiot, to be honest. The reason you TRAIN is so that when a situation arises where you need to use it, you don't HAVE to think about it, because you've trained yourself to know what to do in advance. If you think self-defense is "stuff for the movies" you're a moron, frankly. Jiu-jitsu is a highly effective discipline for self-defense. If you go into shock, get tunnel vision, and lose your hearing when you're scared you really need a HUGE boost of self confidence. This reaction comes from being weak and defenseless.

You clearly know absolutely nothing about fighting and martial arts, so you should probably avoid acting like you know what you're talking about, and should absolutely avoid giving people any sort of advice on the subject.

I can't say it any more clearly, if you think training to learn how to defend yourself is useless or something that happens only in movies, you are really, really stupid. Roll by an MMA gym and see if you can last more than 25 seconds with anyone in the gym. If you can't, you have no business talking about the subject. There are plenty of girls at my gym who can decimate guys a lot bigger than them because they took the time to train themselves instead of being a scared victim who will just go into shock and collapse when something goes wrong.

You sound like a pretty big coward to me. Most likely some fat balding old man who has never had to defend himself. lol.

What are you 14?!?!? Why all the insults? You know nothing about me, so shut your ignorant, muscle head yack!

I'd like to see you in a life and death situation where you have NO idea what the other person is on or what the other person is capable of or what weapons they might be packing. You've seen Remo Williams once too often, kid. Never mind about what you learned in a gym or jujitsu or what you're supposed to do in a controlled setting.

Cops go through a lot of training dealing with unexpected situations such as these and they still get survival mode impairment of their senses. Read "Death Work: Police, Trauma and the Psychology of Survival," by Vincent E. Henry, a retired New York PD Homicide Detective. That's a more accurate account of this type of situation.

For the record, when someone refers to me as pedantic, I take it as a compliment. Thanks hunsperger, I'm proud of being a pedant! :)

It hasn't worked in the States, so why would it work here?

I will agree with you that the States' heavy-handed sentencing has not worked in keeping their crime rate down. I do, however, agree that the death penalty should be reinstated in Canada - but only for what I call "predatory"crimes. Pedophiles who rape/kill children, rapists, etc. - basically serious/heinous acts that are committed against an innocent person.

I was trained in martial arts when I was younger. Where I think the training would help is instilling something in you that you will respond in an instinctive way even when you have gone into that state of tunnel vision. Your body just seems to know what to do, and I think that comes from practising and training multiple times a week, week after week, year after year. I haven't practised in many years, so I do not think it would be ingrained in me any more.

Do research! Not all states in US has death penalty. So this is a stupid loophole for people to keep committing crimes.
This penalty must be applied to everywhere in the country in order to be super effective. Take China as an example.

I'd rather get my ass kicked by Brock Lesnar than roll around with a fucking diseased junkie. Sure you'd probably kick his ass but do you even want to touch him?

I agree, Panther would fit right in with the likes of hunny and BJH. You could spend afternoons in the park bitching and gossiping about the people going by, or hang out at the donut shop whining about everything wrong in the world, or play nickel slots together bragging how much better and smarter you are than everybody else, or watch sports activities and exalt your expertise to each other. The possibilities are endless....

Man, this thread has really unravelled, the train has left the tracks, the plot has been lost....

Who knows what you'd do in a situation like this. No matter how much training you have, as these cops do have training and use it every day, there are going to be situations that would take more than one person to rectify. Look how many men it took to take down that freak and Adriana's....3 cops kicking the shit out of the guy to get him restrained. I doubt you MMA superheroes could do it just by yourself. As another poster said, would you really want to touch this guy, who's blood could be infected with who knows what so that when you happen to punch him in the teeth and you bust a knuckle open and you're both bleeding....well you get the idea.

As for capitol punishment; it's not working in the US, and it's not stopping crime in China either.

Either is having these scum balls sitting in jails costing tax payers money we don't have. Not to mention the guards who put their lives on the line everyday they go to work, for the ammusement of the scum balls who will never get out. They should be put to sleep, end of story.

Self Defense is for idiots. You actually want to touch this guy to "incapacitate" him? What if he bleeds on you or bites you? A pistol wont do squat what you need is a shotgun.
Also, to whoever said self defense wouldn't help, that simply isn't true. If you are trained in jiu-jitsu you can render him incapacitated or unconscious no matter how drugged up he is. It's tough to walk with broken legs, or to stay awake when your carotid arteries are compressed.

The entire principle of jiu-jitsu is leverage. A small person can apply their entire bodyweight to a single joint and it's going to snap whether he's bigger, stronger, or drugged out of his mind. Take a class in jiu-jitsu if you want the best self-defense you can get as a smaller person. DO NOT TAKE KARATE. lol.
