To get an idea or hints..... if relevant to the case or cases you would have to listen to...... Go see a video of Neil DeGrasse Tyson about jury duty and eye witness or witnesses and its reliability.

If you own your own business or have a position that is central to the company you work for, they can write a letter on your behalf to get you excused. For example around this time of year, Mr. Nmjoff is the only member of our sales team who can work the Christmas holidays because he's an atheist while the rest of us are devout Catholics and have to be in church. Or something less silly but equally impactful.

You can send in a note claiming you have COVID, you could also tell the judge that your family was robbed/someone got hit by a car/other reasons that would make you unfit because you can't be impartial.

Be as opinionated as possible when being interviewed by the attorneys. For example if it is about someone growing marijuana, you think any drug dealer should be executed.
Personal experience is that it is worthwhile if you can do it. I understand that it difficult for most. The one I did took almost two weeks and was very disturbing for some jurors.
Take it seriously or don’t do it.

I've received that letter three times over the years, and each time, I eventually got a follow-up saying, nah, never mind, disregard.

I don't know how common that is, but here's hoping you have my luck.

Tell them you are in the military....even as a reservist you are exempt.

If they don’t track the delivery letter just say you never received the jury summons.

“Although I would love to help get this bastard hanged, I have to disclose that I am a sex feind, and so I will certainly be distracted by any female jurors, witnesses, attourneys, clerks, etc., and will likely cumpulsively hit on them too. My perb handle is XXX if you need more info on my affliction/addiction”

Was at a selection years ago. . Guys who got dismissed. One had a terminal disease. Dismissed. Best one was " I hear voices. I know who is guilty". Dismissed.

Have had multiples of these over the years. Since I was central to the company, the GM wrote a simple letter which I returned with the form and a couple weeks later got excused.
Fun fact.
I was selected for jury duty 2006-ish. Got out of it as per the above.
The selection letter stated this was a high profile court case and any selected jurors should prepare to be sequestered for up to or longer than 8 months.
Turns out this was for the Robert Picton trial.

I informed them I was the primary income earner for the family and could not afford extended time off. They excused me.

The second time, I informed them my place of employment could not spare me for any extended time period as I was crucial to the operation. Provided an email contact for my employer. They excused me.

I wonder how the 111,000 Canadian servicemen who gave up there lives in WW1 and WW2 so you can live in a country that has trials and a justice system, would feel about you guys trying to shirk a few days of civic duty?
I agree with you to a certain extent. Entitlement is in good part to blame but we have to keep in mind that society and everybody's support system is quite different than decades ago when most of the jury duty rules were first written; had to that that you have more self employed people than ever before. The gig economy ( self employment) doesn't allow much flexibility for most of us in that regard.

The one I was referring to earlier was a drug trial about importing hash. We were warned that the trial could take up to two years. Really. Thankfully they took one look at me and waved me away. About two years later I happened to open the paper and saw that the trial was wrapping up. That would be a little too much.

I got one of those letters a few months ago. Decided to play the odds and didn’t reply. Case was to have taken four weeks and I couldn’t take that much time away from a self owned business.

The justice industry is so screwed up, and the delaying tactics so pervasive it's why trials are dragged out for years and years sometimes. The lawyers get rich, and the system rewards the guilty by having people unwilling to sit on juries, and have their lives disrupted. The only jurists they get are the people without jobs, families or other committments.

This is why we get some of the decisions from the quality of jurists willing to sit.

I don't think its shirking duty, I think its dealing with the economic reality of potentially being out of work and its income stream for potentially many months.
