I loved it. I thought it was great fun from beginning to end. But, from what I've read, it cost a LOT to make and I guess it just didn't resonate with today's audience as much as it would have needed to to be a hit. I'm in my 40's now and I know that I haven't been part of the target audience for today's movie makers for a long time. The guys I went to the movie with are all guys I've known since high school, so we're all in that same age range and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Again, not really the typical audience member being targeted these days.

I'm sorry to hear that Disney will lose money on this movie but it is Disney. I'm sure they'll be fine. :D And I can see John Carter becoming one of those movies that will find a long life as a future "cult classic" on video.

From what I read it would require 'John Carter' to bring in $500 million in ticket sales in order to break even! That's one helluva gamble for the Disney execs to take! Seems there's just too much greed out there with corporations; year after year targets are raised to excessive unreachable levels.

Previous thread on the movie with some other opinions.

My question is, is the movie mostly actiony or is there lots of dialogue/attempted drama? Some of the dialogue in the trailers struck me as Avatar cheesy. FX and the scenery look great from the little bit I can gather, and we just did get a new theatre out here. But I dont like cheese.
Thanks for the link. Based on what was written and from an initial review I read online, it seemed like a pretty decent flick. Strange how fickle some movie goers can be

In my opinion, most of the movie has a sprit of fun. But yes, I'd say there are definitely some dramatic beats as well meant to give the characters some definition. However, I think the movie's pacing overall is very good. For a matter of perspective, I was not impressed with Avatar. But I've also never had a problem with enjoying cheesy movies, so I don't even know how to judge that anymore. This is a movie based on old pulp novels, so by definition that would be considered "cheesy" by many.

I think the problem is that John Carter is too obscure and dated a character these days to generate any hype over it. They should have cast a big name actor for the title role at the very least.
