I'm might be a car mechanic and reliability wise a Toyota is better then a Merc anyday especially the Mercs they make now.

Vancouver is an amazing city and that is why housing values are so high
My point was that people who have chosen to live in Vancouver and stay there, probably do think it's the best.

Just like people who have chosen Toyotas think they are the best and people who have chosen Mercedes think they are the best.. etc etc...

So, if you measure by a poll of those who have already made the choice, you're going to get the same result.

I think that mr. e is referring to that list that's put out every year by some group in Geneva where they rate the most livable cities in the world. I do remember Vancouver usually listing in the top three and was rated 1st or tied for 1st a number of times.

What criterias are cities rated on?

I've always been curious how that can be determined.. It's kinda stupid if you ask me..but hey, everybody likes numbers and ratings, I guess.. I don't think that means much in most cases.

Not entirely sure, to be honest. I think there's stuff in there about literacy, access to health care, crime rates, transportation access etc... there's quite a list of criteria they look at, apparently. I also remember hearing about how the cities are extremely close in ranking so that if you're ranked 1st, then it's not that much to brag about as #10 would only be like 0.00000000000000000000000000012 points behind you.

Transportation access would have vancouver ranked nowhere near the top 10

Yes Vancouver is boring, they're shutting down massage parlors here right and left, the City won't even allow promoters to bring UFC here

Vancouver is only boring if your lazy, or you are boring. Try going hiking... try skiing, snowboarding, go 4x4ing, go boating, we have unbelievably attractive women here who are bitchy... but at least they are bitchy to everyone! Its fun to try and score the bitches! and once you figure out they want to get with a non douche bag just as much as you want them, its not so bad. As far as hastings being bad, when was the last time that directly affected your life??? Try going to seattle's rough part of town. I went through 35 of the states driving in a 6 month stretch and I can tell ya I never saw anything half as nice.

Try riding a ferry from horseshoe bay and just sit on the top deck a check out where you live... and if that doesn't get ya liking it, smoke some weed without getting beaten down by cops, and if that doesn't help just jump off the fucking ferry.

For a Canadian city, it's pretty exciting and dynamic.... but compared to a typical American metropolitan center, it's not. Vancouver however is a lot more liberal than most cities in North America, and also probably the cleanest.

Holy dug up thread batman! Why the hell would you do that Bear1? Did you even look at the date, you had to have done a search for it, no way that thread popped up on its own for you.
he thought he was answering the "is Vancouver a shithole" thread from sept 2012. Seems to be one started every couple of months. Indistinguishable from each other. The 2007 thread reads exactly the same as 2012...

Bear 2 seems to specialize in reviving long-dead threads. He did it twice last week in the Winnipeg forum. As I said there, I think he just woke up after a long hibernation.

It's all how you look at things.

Tots.

Also, whether one has a decent job/income.

Lots of gentrification and foreign "investment" (still). Lots of local folks are (have been being) squeezed out to the suburbs/outburbs the last decade (or two).

Heh =) is that why advertised self-presumed higher-end SP prices have gone waaay up in Van? 300+/hr as average?! WTH?

Who here's gotten a 50% payraise over the last 5 years without upping their productivity by waaay >50%?

I got it, let's ban all cars, trucks and busses. Put everyone on a bike and all goods will be delivered by horse and carriage. Roll back the clock 100 years. That would probably make people realize what they are missing when they call Vancouver a shit hole.

I am deeply in love with Vancouver. In fact, I wish I was 10 people and could live in 10 different neighbourhoods! I love cooler weather, and Vancouver has plenty of that. I love greenery, and Vancouver has more than its fair share of that. I find that people are happy and friendly, for the most part. There is wealth and there is poverty, like any other place. There are free things to do, and there are expensive things to do, but there is no shortage of things to do. There are low paying and high paying jobs. There are cheap places to live and expensive places to live. We have the ocean (there's water everywhere), and the mountains; the views are incredible. I just can't say enough about this wonderful place!
