Just planning my boxing week shopping list. Can't decide whether to get an Nvidia 6800GT or an ATi Radeon X800XT Pro. Any help be appreciated. :)

Same sort of stuff as you LG. Pet care, lawn care, house work. It's just another day to me. The pisser is it's not over yet. For the next month you're going to have to put up with people asking how your Christmas was. And when you say it was "fine", they always say the same thing, "Just fine, not great?". Did ya see my lips move and say great? Argh!

If it makes you feel better LG I have to go to the most horrible Xmas dinner with the most uptight surly dream-crushing parents in the world. I will have to walk on broken glass until dinner then the air will be harder to cut than the turkey. I admit the food will be awesome or I wouldn't be going. During dinner I will have to answer 20 trick questions to which there are no right answers, then try to find a polite way of leaving. Hey, thats something to look forward to!! I think I can make it now.

You, with your hate-on for christmas, are the lucky one! Next year I'm moving somewhere far away like Australia so I have an excuse not to go.

Does anyone have any anti-depressants, or do I have to smoke 5 dubbies on the way out there?

Same shit more or less just a xmas tree to look at and a kick ass dinner at 5pm instead of pizza pops, can't cruise on xmas day for the principal of it, and it'd probably be dead anyways.

Yo LG whether your into xmas or not ther'll still be some good sales tomorrow. I'm not into to the door crasher sales. The big A&B $20 DVD player, $200 computer, $50 speakers, $40 car stereo, etc......, etc...... Fukkin garbage, and a fukkin joke!!!!

btw: I don't have a hate on for christmas i have a hate on for the hypocrites who act like your buddies all year and then snub you at the holidays ... or the people who act like assholes all year and then figure a $5 gift makes them saints again!

and i hate the commercialism of the whole holiday.

but if someone wants to celebrate that the days are getting longer and the nights are getting shorter i'm up for it!

We have all been taught that the seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis of rotation - the 23.4° offset of the axis from a direction perpendicular to the Earth's orbital plane. The direction of the rotational axis stays nearly fixed in space, even as the Earth revolves around the Sun once each year. As a result, when the Earth is at a certain place in its orbit, the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun and experiences summer. Six months later, when the Earth is on the opposite side of the Sun, the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun and experiences winter. The seasons are, of course, reversed for the southern hemisphere.

The solstices mark the two dates during the year on which the Earth's position in its orbit is such that its axis is most directly tilted either toward or away from the Sun. These are the dates when the days are longest for the hemisphere tilted toward the Sun (where it is summer) and shortest for the opposite hemisphere (where it is winter).

However, there is a complication. The Earth's orbit is very close to being a perfect circle, but not quite. It is somewhat elliptical, which means that the distance between the Earth and the Sun varies over the course of the year. This effect is too weak to cause the seasons, but it might have some influence over their severity. The remainder of this page explains this possibilty.

The Earth reaches perihelion - the point in its orbit closest to the Sun - in early January, only about two weeks after the December solstice. Thus winter begins in the northern hemisphere at about the time that the Earth is nearest the Sun. Is this important? Is there a reason why the times of solstice and perihelion are so close? It turns out that the proximity of the two dates is a coincidence of the particular century we live in. The date of perihelion does not remain fixed, but, over very long periods of time, slowly regresses (moves later) within the year. There is some evidence that this long-term change in the date of perihelion influences the Earth's climate.

The whole explanation

Re: Earth's orbit

Interesting LG, I hadn't thought about perihelion and aphelion in regards to earth and of course that is what causes the ice ages isn't it? So scientists should be able to tell when the next one is coming or how hot it is going to get before it does. What we think of as the greenhouse effect could be more to do with perihelion than pollution. Not that stopping the release of PCB's is a bad thing, but can't they predict the future based on the past?

You'd think it would be a hotter than normal summer in the land under perihelion (in this case Australia, Indonesia etc) and a colder one at aphelion wouldn't it LG, but that isn't what it says is it?

Our calendar isn't very precise and recently scientists calculated that Jesus was actually born sometime in early January and not Dec 25, as we have thought. (Which means we suffered sooner than we should have had to!! Poopy!!)

Incidentally Christmas wasn't that bad this year, Santa was very good and everyone was relaxed. I did take a friend to be my bullet-proof vest and it worked to deflect attention from me, yay!!

So it's alll over now, Yippee!

massagegirl,

typically you can't make future predictions based on past facts (lesson #1 in stats) however, given that the earth has, almost like clockwork, shifted on its axis, then there is a pretty good likelihood it may do it again ...

and so we are, therefore, overdue for another ice age and worse, another axis-shift -- everything dry is gonna get wet ...

maybe renting isn't such a bad idea after all ...

Actually, I read once that there is more evidence to suggest that Jesus was born in May or late April. The early Christians suddenly announced that Jesus was born in December to take advantage of the Saturnalia celebrationas a way to market Christianity to the pagans and heathens.
