Is Air Canad totally fucked up

I need to go to Toronto. So I get a price return on Air Canada.....2100 US DOLLARS.....Are you kidding me????? and that is economy.....

So I start looking around....what happens if I go Seattle to Toronto. It is a long drive to SEATAC but maybe I can save a few bucks......

I can...I can.....I can get a return air from Seattle for 1400 USD......wow I can save 700 bucks by leaving out of Seattle......

Just a minute.......I get a comuter flight to YVR then take the exact same flight to T.O and the exact same flight back....then a commuter flight down to Seattle.....and save $700.....

How fucked up is that.....

So here is my plan.....drive to YVR...park...take a commuter flight to SEATAC one way....$120 ...take the SEATAC...YVR....YYZ flights and return to Vancouver.....then get off the plane and don't go to Seattle....instead drive home....total savings $580.

Same times YVR - YYZ - YVR... same day....$890 CANADIAN

How does Air Canada stay in business? Does anyone actually buy a 2100 USD ticket to fly Air Canada....

i dont know if this helps Ld but with expedia you can pay $710 from seatac to toronto but you have to make stops in denver and boston you would fly on united then air canad

i've never paid over 600 to go to toronto and back. usually in the high fours or low fives. when i first moved out here almost 8 years ago i got a return ticket on air transat for like 370 bucks taxes and everything. but thats before our regional carrier airlines flopped after 9-11.

The only reason I fly Air Canada is because I still have a shitload of Aeroplan miles to burn up. And most of those miles were earned from frequent flying with the late lamented Canadian Airlines.

OK, briefly this is how airfares work...

Travel Industry Primer...

There are three basic types of carriers:

1. Regular carriers, like American or Air Canada
2. Low cost carriers, like Southwest or Westjet
3. Charter airlines, like American Trans Air or Air Transat

All regular carriers have multi-tiered fares that follow rules depending on the class of service you purchase. They all work more or less with the same templates, and are all members of IATA - a consortium of airlines headquartered in Montreal, and closely allied to the ICAO, a United Nations body established under the Warsaw Convention.

The basic classes of airline service are designated thus: F, Y, C, H, M, K, L, G, and so on. F stands for First Class, whereas Y is full fare Economy. Both are 100% refundable and re-routeable. These tickets are as good as cash. The other fare classes are variants of Economy and based on the amount you paid are subject to rules that govern the refundability, and the time limits they can be used in. So, as it happens often, the passenger next to you may have paid $300 for a seat that you paid $2000 for, but his would have been heavily restricted.

Within each class of service lies a specific designation that details the conditions of purchase or rules. An H class for instance may be designated further with letters (ex.: YLAPCA14) that indicate when the ticket must be purchased by - in this case at least 14 days prior, and time of travel - after 8am, before 5pm, etc...

In the case of LD, he was quoted a full fare economy ticket, probably because he was travelling within three days, or there were no seats available in the lower classes of service - in other words, the flight was almost sold out. (I don't know his details, nor will I comment on them due to the complexity of his situation)

Low cost carriers on the other hand are maverick upstarts who elbowed their way unto the scene, much to the traveller's benefit, and espoused lower fares, backed up by lower costs principally through the use of non-Union labour and following a model that rejects the traditional fare structures. The amount of manpower and technology required by the airlines to monitor and govern airfares is extremely expensive, but they are clinging to it, choosing instead to spin off their own low cost variants to compete with the likes of Westjet.

Charter airlines are a different animal altogether and serve no useful purpose in this discussion.

I agree try HMY (the old harmony) They have great service and staff.
I flew with them just recently to both TO and LA very good.
I will only use AC when there is no other option, I will never use westjet(yuc)

NO! No one that I know of flys with them. Too expensive. West-jet is far more economical, but they don't offer much in the way of food.

Bring your own lunch.....and don't let any of the passengers see this.....lest you be dubbed CHEAP!

I can only recommend Harmony Airways. I love the little airplane salt and pepper shakers they give you. It is the little things that count.

Cheap Fares are great but.....

I like a cheap fare as much as the next guy, but when airlines start charging rediculously cheap fares, (remember Jetsgo), you gotta wonder.
Planes are expensive. alot of people (jobs) are involved in getting that little bird into the air safely. I want to fly on an airline that i am confident in, sure thay have enough funds for fuel, and haven't cut corners in the important stuff. Not feeding you is one thing, packing more people into a plane is another. Cutting corners on maintenance and legitimate parts is totally not a cost cutting measure I am in favor of though.


Just my two cents.

Cheap? Nah, more like envy since they forgot or didn't have the forethought to do the same, and have to resort to eating a crappy overpriced bun! Nothing better than a Timmy's sub on a five hour flight! :)

I always try the main three: AC, WestJet and Harmony and see who's the lowest. They'll usually be the same, but there's often one who will slip in for a materially cheaper rate. Unfortunately, since I hate AC, it tends to be them sometimes as well. I've got a whackload of AC points, but I never use 'em anyways, and for the times I have, they've always jacked me around with blackouts and such so it was irrelevant.

FYI, WestJet's prices change sometime in the late afternoon from what I've seen. So, if you see a cheap flight on them in the AM and humming and hawing, you better grab it while you can, else the cheap flight may be bumped to the next day.
