If you had to move away from Van, where would you go?

With the high cost of living here, and some of the other factors, what other places would you go to?

As much as I can complain about Vancouver, it does have the best weather in Canada. But the cost of living would be alot more manageable elsewhere. So where else is there?

I've compared notes with colleagues who live in Calgary, Ottawa and Toronto on this subject in the past.

Where we are totally different is the actual costs of living in those cities during the winter. They paying more because of more heating costs (except Calgary), winter clothing for them and their families and also a mandatory mid winter break to go south because they have been inside 24/7 for four or five months.

I think if I had to get out of town for monetary reasons, it would probably be in the Okanagan somewhere. Lower housing costs, lower cost of living and usually beautiful weather most of the year. The terrain is beautiful with its lakes and mountains. Plus it's a lower key atmosphere in the cities up there.

For natural beauty of the surroundings and space Albuquerque, New Mexico.
For having a bit of everything San Diego- with LA so close and Mexico next door what else can you ask for? For fun only though.

The traffic in Vancouver is just maddening I admit. There is nothing relaxing about the city.

We have a place on one of the gulf islands. Close to Vancouver but very isolated at the same time.

^....I don't live anyplace near Vancouver, and never plan to move.
If I had too, the Gulf Islands would be at the top of my list, then Victoria.
I've always considered buying a small place on Galiano, or Saltspring, but they are now very expensive ,and my time gobbled up here, means a cottage there, would just sit empty.

In Canada, I'd say one of the Atlantic provinces. Having an ocean nearby keeps the temperature from swinging one way or the other too much, and properties out there get some breathing space.

I visit the Gulf Islands frequently and can advise the property values are the lowest now than in the past 15 years. When the U.S. had their banking crisis, those owners unloaded their properties at an alarming rate. One place I saw used to be valued upwards of $2M is now on the market for $900 K. There are many places to be had for $300K or less. All decent properties too.

Downside is the taxes are crazy there because of the Island Trust.

If I had to stay in Canada, then Toronto or Montreal.

If I had to stay in North America, then southern California near or on the coast.

If anywhere in the world, then Sidney Australia.

Somewhere in Thailand maybe, Nha Trang (Vietnam), Singapore, Coromandel Peninsular in New Zealand, Bali... or possibly a number of other similar places. Basically somewhere with beach, ocean, sun and not too far from city life.
That is, IF I had to move from Vancouver. Not that fussed on other parts of North America. Too many other interesting places in the world.

Portland, OR. good work prospects, Microbrews galore, reasonable property values, no state sales tax, short drive to the ocean/mountains, great climate. Still close enough to drive back to YVR for a visit...or better yet -Amtrak

third vote for Australia. Lane filtering (lane splitting) on motorcycles legal. In the ozzie state of New South Wales (where Sydney is)
you not only have lane splitting but legal and regulated perbing.

I'd want to be on the Island, in Victoria. Only problem with that is my work is very specialized and I wouldn't have a job there. And the cost of ferries every time you decided to visit anywhere. The Okanagan appeals to me as well.
In the Prairies, you have some very friendly people. People I would be glad to have as neighbours and friends. But it's not doable for someone born and raised on the coast. I need to be around a body of water.
