Went to insure my 6 year old car.

The premium was over 5% more than last year.

They say that vehicles depreciates @ about 10% at that age. My vehicle is a year older and 10% cheaper and I am paying 5% more.

Hello NDP, thanks for removing toll from Port Mann. Nice gift to one (and all ) of your supporters.
Hello Crusty Clarke, for stealing ICBC funds to show surplus.

Another reason to cut down pooning. Sorry ladies, it's all politicians' fault.

Just had to vent it out. Feel free to let your frustrations out along with me. Cheers.

on my 2016 Honda Civic it is only 1100 / year. Are you getting all the optional stuff from ICBC? I only get the basic with ICBC. The rest i get from BCAA.
You do not say how much your insurance was so not sure if $1100 good or not. (i am at -43%)

Mine is an SUV, sorry I typed car unintentionally. The insurance was about 1800 last year and it was over 1890 this year.

Yea, I get the full insurance from ICBC and I am at 43% discount as well. I used to get it from this company (can't remember the name now) that came to market over a decade ago but when I hit the 43% discount mark, they just could not compete with ICBC. Interesting that you mention BCAA, I never considered going to them. I think mainly because I thought AA in BCAA stood for Alcoholics Anonymous and I feel I am not an alcoholic .......... yet. (denial, the first sign).

Where do you live? Are you including optional coverage such as $300 deductible for collision and you have $2+ million liability coverage?

Just wait what the NDP has in store, with 20+ years of accident free driving have to be more careful, while less experienced drivers no changes.

Hello NDP, thanks for removing toll from Port Mann. Nice gift to one (and all ) of your supporters.
Anybody who bought into this as a good thing deserves exactly what they get with congestion charges (a bridge/tunnel toll by any other name), mobility pricing and any other BS charges coming our way.
Unfortunately those of us that knew better will get the same boning.
I loved the toll- it moved the cheap fuckers to the Alex Fraser and Patullo and opened the road for those that consider a FAIR toll the cost of doing business and expeditious travel.
Should have kept it in place until the new tunnel and/or Patullo is built, then reduced the toll to say $2 at all new crossings. Leave the AF alone if necessary to placate the great unwashed.
Fair!

I hear ya! I voted NDP although I didn't like the sound of Toll free Port Mann in their election promises. As much as I admire them for keeping their promise, I wish they hadn't. Having said that, I can poon a bit more freely north of the river now, but that's beside the point.

Seems like I am speaking from both sides of my mouth but then I think with both heads as well. So there you go ..

like i said. I get basic with ICBC. Underinsured 2million and 3million Liability. Everything else i get with BCAA. Because i am a BCAA member and also have BCAA home insurance i get many discounts.
I live in DT Vancouver. Probably going to sell the car in a few years. I have underground parking at home but still a pain to drive in the city. I am retiring in a few years so will not need the car. Would probably use EVO or Car2Go for the few times i would need a car.

Muffdiver, can you clarify your BCAA comment please? BCAA doesnt provide auto insurance? In reference to BCAA your talking about ICBC add ones such as Roadstar etc correct?

Thanks in advance.

The BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) regulates ICBC. If you want something to change send the BCUC a complaint. I suggest asking for "pay as you drive" insurance. That should lead to a 20% to 40% reduction, way more if you have multiple vehicles. Sometimes a complaint can be effective.

Do you guys see much of a difference in price using non ICBC insurance for the extra stuff like collision,3rd party etc etc? I use BCAA for everything except my car.

I used to use 3rd party at about 25% discount from ICBC. What I found when I got hit from behind was they really wanted me to go to one of their body shops. I pushed back for over a week while they said I had to go to XYZ for repairs. I finally got my choice but it was unnecessary bullshit.

I went back to ICBC the next year because 3rd party insurer dicked me around so much."

I am still trying to think of this agency who started offering insurance like that. Canadian Direct, may be? Canadian something with Hongkong Bank at its back. I too heard a story that things were not as easy to deal with when an accident did happen. I stopped using them when ICBC started the additional 3% discount above 40% when you were accident free for long time, that's when the other company could not compete.

Miss Hunter. Is your Honda Civic made of Gold? Just curious. Just joking, I think it is that high because they are treating you as a new driver and so you are not getting any discount.

A few months ago, I drove a friend of mine to an Autoplan office for his 2007 or 2008 Honda Civic and he paid around 1600 I believe. Of course, he had discount working for him.

What an ignorant thing to say. Basically as long as your route is good you don't give a shit about others. The Alex Fraser was a shit show and scheduled to get worse as it was going to be the only route over the Fraser that would be left untolled. With the removal of tolls on the Port Man crossing things have gotten much better.

Yes, that is who it was, Canadian Direct. I used them for about 4 years until I need to make a claim.

Nope you missed the entire point- I give you more credit than that.
I'm saying that I don't mind paying the freight for my use of the road.
Others that can't/won't just make it easier for those like me that are prepared to pay a fair price.
But there are many out there that will drive an extra 5 miles and spend an extra 30 minutes in rush to save a couple of bucks.
My time is more valuable than that.
Did you notice the golden Ears Bridge before and after the toll removal? It was avoided like the plague on principal from so many. Now, it's as busy as it was designed to be.
Now, good for those that finally use it. But to instead use the Mission or Mary Hill routes to save $2.80 was ludicrous.
And why wouldn't I be happy to have a less congested pathway?
I'm not looking for a free ride.
There needs to be user-pay to afford these upgrades.
There was a perfectly good system in place- but as usual-
1. the masses want everything for free, and
2. The NDP made a promise to the great unwashed and now the rest of us will be paying more for the same thing with a new moniker.
Tolls are a reality. In a perfect world ALL the crossings would carry a $1 toll, the traffic would have even distribution and the users would be paying a fair rate.
But get a new government involved and see it all fall apart to "appease" the masses.

I am glad the tolls were removed on both bridges and that the traffic volumes have increased as anticipated. While tolled, neither bridge attracted the volumes they were designed to carry so we weren't getting value for our asset. An additional, both monetary and non-monetary, value is that the residents of New West are able to breathe a sigh of relief after years of increased congestion in their city.

I am all for bringing on a fairer congestion or road tax to fund future transit and transportation infrastructure projects. Public roadways have been heavily subsidized by taxpayers for too long.

*Interesting that the BC Liberals deleted dire warnings and suggestions from the report they received on the health of ICBC to garner votes - shame!

I know I am risking hijacking my own thread, but on the subject of tolls, they could've started charging tolls on either all or none. They should've dropped the toll fee down though. That way the traffic stays where it really should be staying and may be driver would not be complaining as much because they are paying less. $6-7 bucks for a round trip was ridiculous.

Personally speaking, it was not the money, the problem was getting billed for it. I made many trips to poon and I hated the idea of leaving a trail.

The idea of distance based tolling is under discussion now within the GVRD

DDcanz,
you're right I did take it wrong the way you wrote it. To me it sounded like your attitude was Keep the tolls so I have less traffic and screw the Alex Fraser, let the pee-ons take that route. Some people have to take the Alex Fraser, not because it wasn't tolled.

I disagree that Tolls are inevitable. I'd like to think that Government should spend within their means, use the existing road taxes they collect, and manage the money properly including replacing bridges when their useful life has come to an end. It's when the sheep adopt the mindset that more taxes are acceptable that we are done. There is a limit, as a percentage of income, that Taxes should not exceed.
