How likely do you think it is that China will cancel the winter Olympics ???

After reading your link and this one, it seems as though the The WTA made the change.

As far as having the balls for the winter Olympics: My personal feelings about the Communist Party of China (highlighted to avoid claims of racisim and hopefully derail that conversation) is: They don't give a rat's ass about world opinion and even less about the safety and security of people within their borders; or anywhere else for that matter.

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
Cancelled or not I think Canada should boycott them.
The wrongful and politically motivated imprisonment of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig is enough for me to got tell them to shove their Olympics where the sun don't shine. And that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to China's transgressions over the past many years.
I know lots of people won't agree. You shouldn't mix politics and sports and athletes should not suffer because of international disputes but countries have been mixing politics and sports for a long time now.
Canada missing from a Summer Olympics would not be significant but a Winter Olympics would be a much grander statement.
But we won't. Our politicians are too spineless.

This is *one* of the reasons why I think the Olympics should stop moving around. Pick one country who will host it forever. Greece, Luxumberg, whatever. Down size it to something less about dick swinging and more about athletic competition.

Sending any Canadian to China while the court case in BC is not settled; is a security risk for that Canadian; eg could be thrown in jail too. Esp if it involved doping for Canadian Athletes.

The Chinese Company Huawei is an big information gathering source for the Chinese government.

It begs to differ where they got the money to expand so fast. My thoughts go back to all those failed Asian or far east mutual funds that failed in Hong Kong in the 90sand early 2000s. Alot were invested in telecommunications companies... I wondered if those companies are now part of Huawei...

Many people feel that Nortel failed due to Chinese esponiage and information passed on by the Chinese government to Huawei which allowed it to get contracts that otherwise would have gone to Nortel.

Fuck the CCP. It ain't a reality for the time being but the rest of the world needs to slowly shut them out and rely on each other for trade moving forward. Should look at the crazy Aussies for inspiration. They gave China the middle finger, moved on and even tho they haven't fully recovered from it, their trade with other, more deserving countries has increased to take up the slack.

As for the Olympics, no way in hell China cancels it. They'd lose too much "face" if they did. Fucking posers.

You may be correct, but if the pandemic is still going strong comes February, and they don't cancel the event, they will need to make a painful decision. They will likely not want to let fans from outside China enter the country, considering how paranoid they are about the virus. Which leaves 2 options, empty stands or allow only Chinese citizens in the stands. Neither option will be very appealing I suspect to the "image is everything" Chinese authorities. The Japanese made the correct choice in this regard during the summer Olympics and left the stand empty. If the Chinese decide locals attend the events and not people from outside of China, there will be incredible blow back about how racist they are and how huge an advantage their athilites will have over the athilites of other countries with no fans cheering for them.

Of course knowing the Chinese, maybe they will assign sub groups of the locals in the stands the job of cheering for assigned athelites from other countries. Now that would be hilarious.

Now that Meng Wanzhou is on her way back to China and the two Michaels are on a plane back to Canada; I’d say chances are a lot better that Canada will participate.

Any further bullying in the South China Sea by China might make a number of countries drop out.

Got to say things could south very quickly if there’s anymore sabre rattling.

This past summer I did a preliminary interview for a tech job that included travel to China monthly. I declined it based upon all the tension in the area. Also since it’s a tech job and would be in China monthly, I didn’t want to get on their radar and possibly be imprisoned for being a spy. Shame because it was right for my skill set and experience.

Don't think anyone in North America have been buying Huawei phones for a while now since they got dropped by the Google play store. Not to mention the potential for China using Huawei phones to spy and collect data on unsuspecting users.

Sucks to hear bbb but u made the right call. After what happened to the 2 Canadians that got imprisoned for no fucking reason, other than for political dick swinging. Everyone should take notice and stay the fuck away from China like the plague.

Understand that the Chinese government and people don't work like rational humans. They are motivated by "face", ego and have had a national inferiority complex for decades (if not centuries). The CCP is all and any questions, dissent or discussion is stamped out immediately.

They will never cancel the Olympics, they would run the event even if the Chinese are the only ones there and crow about how much stronger, smarter and more able they are and decry the racist, weakling and corrupt other countries that refused or were unable to attend.

They lie, cheat, steal on a governmental level, things like contracts and copyrights and law mean nothing to them, unless they are being wielded in their own favor and then anyone who dares stand up to them with their own tactics and aggression become mortal enemies. By virtue of their size, resources, availability of cheap/free/slave labour, they have become a world economic powerhouse and the entire world is guilty of letting them get away with it. Cheap electronics, clothes and goods have meant the deaths of millions in camps and factories. They have built a road network of highways and freeways, and trains that put basically every other country on the planet to shame. It's admirable on one level, but even their own elites are not safe. There have been many who prospered under the system, and those who are also party members are going to do fine. Those few who got rich while outside the party, are in for a rough ride, as the CCP reasserts itself over them. Look at how some of their largest companies have been targeted in the past year.

Look at the Huawei thing. She gets picked up, they jail two of ours and put them on a sham trial. Deal cooked, they let her go, and within hours they are released "for medical reasons". Even a Trumper can see the ridiculousness of this. Every now and then there's generational softening of the CCP and just as often, they snap back to complete dictatorship. They are childish bullies with nuclear weapons and and massive economic arsenal. If the rest of the world doesn't get their shit together, they are never going to change.

China has been doing their homework. Saving their money, manufacturing stuff, and planning long term. Something the US hasn't done. US military is no match for the Chinese. As pointed out, the US is bankrupt and their military is depleted from endless wars . For every warship the US can put in the South China Sea, China can put 10. Seems the time to wake up was about 50 years ago.

Even if they wanted to cancel the winter Olympics, the IOC has the host country (w/e hosting) by the literal balls

It is not up to China to cancel the winter Olympic or not. Is the Olympic committee. Just like the summer games Japan wanted to cancel but can't coz the contract they sign said unless is a natural disasters the holding country can cancel otherwise only the Olympic committee can cancelled it.

Also China will not cancel it due to face. They will have strict restrictions on foreign. athletes like making them all quarantine for 28 days while Chinese athletes don't have to giving them a major advantage in name of keeping the winter games safe. 28 days of not training and not able to get use to whether in one country is a major disadvantage for athletes.

Holy fuck!!! I got it right!!! Beijing will only allow local Chinese fans in the stands - just as I predicted!!!

That's going to go over like a lead ballon with every other country. The Chinese are going to look really bad that that did not do like Japan and be fair about it. How is it fair that only Chinese athelites will have fans cheering them on ?!?!
