OK, another pet peeve of mine is how people ride escalators downtown, specifically those who get on, stand in the middle and treat it as an amusement ride for their fat ass. Is it just me or do lazy escalator riders bother you too?

I guess we won't ask hifi what he has to do to ride the elevator.

You forgot on the poll once your on the stupid thing do you:

Hold the hand rail, or the hand rails for pussys

Stand with both feet on the same stair, or put one leg up on the next step.

Look like a deer caught in the head-lights when you see a hot chick going the other way on the escalator.

Don't stand in the middle on the escalator's in the Toronto subway system. You'll get pushed down and trampled. Stand to the right, walk on the left.

Another thing about escalators. Don't you hate the people who upon getting off the damn thing then stand there blocking the way. They either stand there talking to whoever they are with about where they should go now or just stand there looking around. GET OUT OF THE FUCKIN' WAY!!!

not a ride?

YES FINALLY.... somebody else who realizes escalators are not a ride!!!
Not a ride? Why do they move then? Why not a stationary staircase?

Can I ask why, if you insist on walking up the escalator, you don't just find a stairwell and walk up the stairs? Save the escalator for those who aren't as physically able to climb up a flight of stairs.

That way nobody would have anything to complain about.

Cause in many places (stores, malls, etc.) stairs are actually not prominently or centrally located. Escalators are always in prominent and easily accessible places, whereas you'd have to walk all over the damn place trying to find the stairwell.

And why walk up the escalator? ... you get to the top faster.

ya, I realize that

my reply was directed more at zoe_zee and Marvin, and was meant to be sarcastic.

point was, some people on the escalator may not be able to walk up, or at least not as fast. Agree that these people should step aside, but many escalators are not that wide to allow you to pass.

so everyone just relax...you are probably only gonna be set back by 3-4 seconds by waiting. And I don't think "riding" the escalator is any more lazy than "walking" the escalator...not sure how much work it really is to walk up one of them.

Escalators

I must admit, when I take the escalators with the hordes of Skytrain riders I try to walk up the stairs behind a gal with a nice butt that is also walking.

Ah the allure of beautiful women!

But if there is a smokin hottie (Eden?) standing, then I will likely stand too. Down a couple of steps mind you ;)

Walter,

Obviously, I am not an insensitive bastard who would criticise those who are not able to walk up stairs and thus ride out the escalator. My specific pet peeve is directed at those people who are fully capable of walking the stairs and choose not to, and yet do not have the courtesy to get out of the way of those who walk the stairs.

It is "my" pet peeve and thus I post as such. Let me guess, you like to ride the escalator, correct?

Just having you on a bit too. It is true that when I left Toronto I also had to adjust to a new escalator etiquette ... where it is much less agressive and you're expected to actually stand on the escalator. Although I still find it annoying, it probably is more civilized.

nope, I actually walk it. But I get more peeved at people who stand in the middle of the moving sidewalks at the airport and get in my way. Airports I am in a hurry...dept stores, not so much.

The moving sidewalks at airports ... I don't even bother with those anymore. Get one big family with all their luggage carts parked on those things ... you can walk faster.

Probably ... but I can understand it in a way ... mother, father, 4 kids, maybe grandma in tow. 3 luggage carts packed mile high. Just off an exhausting 5 hour flight. There's no way they feel like walking, but they also can't boot it along the moving sidewalk either. Kids are running back and forth, but mom and dad can barely stand, let alone walk.

Normally, I walk up escalators, but if you were above me dressed like that, I'd stay put, and to hell with anyone who wanted to pass me! :p

I like to get my exercise (especially my asscheeks), so I'd rather climb the escalator than just stand there. Here in E-town, the "stand to the right" rule only seems to apply to the underground LRT.

People that are in that much of a hurry need a public beating
When you drive in traffic and come along a slower vehicle, you pass them, right? Simple solution. When you come to a car parked in the middle of the road doesn't that piss you off, so you honk to pass by, right?

So, if I am on the street and come to a person walking slower, then I go around them. When I come to a person blocking my way on an escalator, it drives me nuts because the inconsiderate asshat (provided that they are able bodied) shouldn't be so self serving and not think of others who have to wait for them to take their sweet time enjoying the ride up or down.

It is not that I am in a hurry, I just like to go at my own pace and if it is disrupted by an insensitive lardass on an escalator, it drives me nuts - this happens to me at least three times a day! So for you to say that people in that much of a hurry need a beating, I hope I run into you one day on an escalator.
