How Chinese SPs get trained: anyone interested in joining my field research?

Time again to ride another hobby horse of mine—field research in sexual anthropology. This year I plan to travel overseas to the world's biggest concentration of SPs in any one place: the town of ChangPing in China's Pearl River delta.

There, over 300 000 girls provide erotic services, mostly in saunas, KTVs, barber shops and massage spas. 95% are under 24, and most migrated to this area from the hinterland to work in those gigantic sweatshop-style factories that produce most of our consumer goods.

Many girls soon find out they have a choice: to work long hours on the assembly lines for less than $200 a month—or else earn more than 5 times this amount as SPs. So no sex trafficking here; capitalist incentive motives are always far more effective.

What's especially interesting to me is that the ChangPing sex industry is "highly developed and run in the same way as legitimate private businesses. Recruiting is standardized, training is provided, and marketing strategies are conceived and executed."

No wonder that by far the best service I've enjoyed in Vancouver came from SPs originally trained in China—but past an age when their skills would have been in great demand back home.

I suggest they have more than the "two options in life". As they are free to work as prostitutes,
why wouldn't they be free to work in numerous other positions of employment, just as women
do in Bangkok, Hong Kong and other places in the world? It's not like ChangPing has only two
types of jobs for the females there.

As to enjoyment of work, what does this really mean? I've heard of some people who've won
millions through the lottery yet kept on with their job. I guess they really enjoyed it, since
they didn't have to do it anymore, yet still did, but i think well over 90% of people in this
position would retire in a heartbeat.

What is it about sex employment that would make one enjoy this line of work? The physical
intimacy, stimulating conversation, perhaps - certainly it wouldn't be the high risk of STIs,
bad dates, or rude smelly folks - but one could easily obtain those benefits w/o being an SP.
So is the bottom line, really, not so much the enjoyment of the work as the money?

If i wired you 20 million USD today, would you disappear to the Caribbean for the next year,
or perhaps be following tantalizeme to ChangPing? Would most SPs still persist in their
profession if they could make the same money doing other work, such as [a] a makeup
consultant, or a model, or [c] an interior decorator, or [d] a shopping tour guide for
extremely wealthy foreign visitors? I have my doubts.

Finally i'd like to offer a theory for further research, that more Asian women, especially those
still living in Asia, have attitudes about life that make them enjoy their life and work more
than Western feminists. IMO that is the experience of many Western men who have been
involved with the SP business or non hooking ladies in Thailand.

Another line of reasoning is used by Ms. Kennedy. All prostitutes "had dreams and their dreams were not of staying where they were and being in the trade," she says. "I just can't be convinced that that is a career choice that women want to make and stay with."

Sgt. Doug Lang, head of the Vancouver police department's vice unit, agrees. "In talking to the women, I have never, never spoken to a prostitute who's said to me 'I enjoy what I do, so leave me alone.' "

But to Mr. Young, this argument is both wrong and irrelevant.

It's wrong, he says, because "there are some, and I've met some, that very much enjoy what they do. They tend to be much more in the escort service where they have some degree of autonomy and control."

Ms. Sandrelli seconds that. "I know women, some of my best friends in Toronto, who choose to work. They're working, they're working out of their homes, and they are loving it. They're very successful, they're great businesspeople and they are very content."

But more importantly, says Mr. Young, whether prostitutes enjoy their work, or dream of doing something else, is irrelevant to the fundamental question of choice. Many people dislike their jobs and wish for something better, he says, but that does not mean they are victims of coercion. "I see no difference between a miserable office worker and a miserable prostitute."

with funding from vancouver coastal health and the vancouver foundation we developed occupational health and safety training materials for the canadian sex industry and included the asian sp's in our work to develope it. we translated the questions into cantonese and through an agency called orchid, now known as the aesha project (they put a call out for participation here too) we held focus groups in asian parlours.

they wrote their answers by hand in cantonese, it's really beautiful to look at...i know it says cock in cantonese in there some where lol.

these women are not mostly trafficking victims, some are but most are migrant workers seeking a better life in canada.

many people want out of their jobs, i am sure that 95% of toilet scrubbers at macdonald's would like to change professions too. i did try to exit sex work about 10 years ago when my ex husband demanded i do so and was never so miserable. i don't think that as a worker we appreciate our jobs, income and quality of life provided by this work until we don't have it.

i always tried to be good to youse guys but in the last 10 years my attitude has shifted significantly to a genuine appreciation for the life i lead....that's just me though.

Lenny, my only point is that when there are fewer options for a person, you will have more women doing sex work just to survive. As I stated, some will love it, but many won't. tant is not known for his spontaneity. His sessions are cookie cutter copies of the ones before, the main reason for bringing the kit bag is to make sure of that.

That's why this "assembly" line list of services works well for that kind of client. I don't see anywhere in this long list of things these employees must perform where it says she has a choice to do or not do something based on hygiene or personal preferences in order to exert some kind of control over her own work place. I assume she would be fined, fired, or punished in some way for leaving anything off the list, which, again, is why this kind of guy prefers the employee over the independent set up any day of the week.

Imagine getting an employee forced to perform a list of services who is under 25 as well, and in a place where her competition is 250 others exactly the same as her. Who wins the client? I don't know whether it is true or not, one of the AMPs I know had a few girls, the manager said the girls working there to pay "debts", I don't know what kind of debt it would be, i assume it must be big debt. What it comes down to gentlemen, is using your brain. Thinking all women in the sex trade hate it is incorrect, but thinking all women in the sex trade love it is also incorrect. Some hate it, some love it. And frankly, it's probably fairly obvious which is which. Women advertising being open 24/7 is a red flag, women who don't speak any English doesn't necessarily mean they're trafficked or forced into it for survival, but it is a fact that women are trafficked into Canada so that is a possible sign. And having "debts" is a major red flag, that's how sex trafficking works. Also, as much as everyone loves a deal, women with low rates are generally seeing tons of clients in a day, which if you're seeing 10+ guys in one day, I'd have a hard time believing you're not paying for drugs or forced to do it.

So I'm definitely not attacking you guys for being interested in AMPs or overseas pooning, nor am I saying you should suspect every SP of being in it for the wrong reasons, but please, just use your head, and look for obvious signs. Because if you ignore the signs that an SP is in this for the wrong reasons, you are part of the problem. Most of SP working in coastal cities of China, I believe, are from rural areas in inner china.
This rural-urban migration is caused by a number of interconnected socio-economic factors.
So, sex industry in China connot be analyzed from a single aspect, but must be seen from many different aspects.
