It's a full 2006 years (more or less) since the death of Christ. We are still on the Christian calendar, it seems.
The Chinese calendar marks this point in time differently. The Chinese New year is celebrated by not only the Chinese, but Koreans and Japanese and other Asians (ie: Cambodians, Vietnamese, Laotians, etc.). For these billions upon billions of people, the year is 4703.
For the hundreds of millions of people around the world who trace their heritage to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Pakistan, India, and Central Asia, the new year is "NawRuz", the year is currently 1385.
For the Jews, it is currently the year 5767. We almost lost all the Jews of the world as well as their marking of the calendar.
Time is a continuum. Humans mark the year chronologically because we are supposed to look backwards to look forwards. Let 2007 A.D. be the first year the Christian West makes not the same mistakes it made in the past.
