OK sometimes Nazism is good. What I mean is, sometimes being a Nazi of grammar is good. Now I'm not one for calling the kettle black, so please give me a little slack here; sometimes grammar sin just goes too far.

One "VanIsland Lisa" posted a thread called "How do I make them take my pic's down". In the body of the post, she says, "Any idea's?".

When I drive down the street, I see all sorts of signs such as: "Delanie's", "Tim Horton's", "Ricky's", and "Dunkin' Donut's".

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE??!!?

Why oh why oh why is there such a freaking love affair with the apostrophe that people turn something into a possessive when it should be simply pluralized, and why the hell does every stinking shop have to belong to someone, even someone that can't be a real person, a "Dunkin' Donut"?

Someone knowledgeable tell me the reasons behind this crazed lunacy, this obsession, this mad inadequacy that makes Joe Sixpack itching to apostrophize even their Christian names.

I have developed a mad rash and want to pick off all the scabs. I want to pour gasoline on my wounds. I want to jam needles under my fingernails. I want to rake my tongue over razor blades. Bring back the Death Penalty. Bring back the shooting squads. Just please make it all stop. Please.

Dunkin' Donuts = Dunkin(g) Donuts
An apostrophe can be used to show that certain sounds in the usual spelling have not been spoken.
eg. f**kin' hot pussy or tits n' ass
Not trying to piss you off, just tryin' to help.:)

I know what you mean. Sometimes it's just painful to see the English language butchered.

But in the case of the eating establishments that you've cited, remember that they are advertising a name. In each case I believe the name includes a silent or implied component such as:

Delanie's Restaurant
Tim Horton's Donuts
Ricky's Place or perhaps Restaurant

The possessive form is therefore appropriate.

I'm only a prick to people that think because they use spellcheck, they can run around picking at little mistakes.
You knew what she meant by demolton or however it was spelt.
People who do this were more than likely never praised by parents, only picked apart about what they did wrong.
And I've bin kalled wrse then a prk so brng it on.
Did you understand that? was the meaning different because of the spelling.
The message is the media, not the spelling.
I think you should talk to yourself more often.

The World
Eats, Shoots & Leaves

Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation is a great book to improve punctuation.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?isbn=1592400876&itm=1

When it was given to me as a present I groaned inwardly and thought, how boring. A book on punctuation. When I finally sat down to read it though, I went through it cover to cover in one sitting. The author manages to simplify and explain punctuation in an entertaining way. Amazing!

Punctuation can entirely change the meaning of a sentence, as the title of the book subtly points out.

"Delanie's", "Tim Horton's" and "Ricky's", are correct.

"Dunkin' Donut's". should be "Dunkin Donuts" or "Dunkin's Donuts".

I'm getting hungry. I think I'll go the Earl's

Unless the name of the of the proprietor is named Dunkin Donut. In that case, the apostrophe is still appropriate, as in:

Dunkin Donut said:
Hi, my name is Donut, Dunkin Donut. Welcome to my establishment, Dunkin Donut's restaurant. It belongs to me. I've dropped the word "restaurant" in the name as I thought that it would be a bit catchier that way...
as sunnysideup has already stated. But I agree that VanIslandLisa's use of the apostraphe in the word
is incorrect as it was meant to indicate plurality.

The second one is incorrect, but the first one is proper -- it's called a contraction, with the apostrophe replacing the missing letters in the word "pictures."

Wow never even considered that "pic's" could be a contraction of "pictures". Good one! Still I doubt it was on purpose... but what a fluke!

Ye's, it's definitely a judgment call.

Like you, I cringe at all the misuse's of apostrophe's. And it's getting worse with the internet. (Or as the real Dubya would say, "the internet's".) But over the year's I've come to understand that some of the apparently questionable one's can be contraction's.

Remember what Dave Barry once wrote: An apostrophe is something used to warn you that an "s" i's about to come up.
