Hey ginger, I'll be in Japan soon as well . Fly Sept 14.fisrt visit to Asia. One week yoga retreat in mountains near Osaka . then week and a half touring country. Got my rail pass . My experience in the "floating world " ( o-misu or honourable water) was awkward and difficult until I found an agency in Tokyo called Asian Mystique, which specializes in English speaking girls and clients. There's places with "all you can drink" for an hour. While you're drinking, a beautiful girl will sit beside you and ask you to buy her a drink. (Not included in all you can drink). Depends on how many places are you going. JR pass may save you some money on transit. It's only available for foreigners and you should research ahead (it can get pretty complicated).
In recent years I think many more people from the major cities can speak some English. It may still be a good idea to download Japanese language on your google translate app. Espeically if you don't plan to get data/WIFI service there.
If you smoke, there are designated smoking area in many places. You can't smoke anywhere you want.
No tipping in restaurant, it could be seen as an insult.
There are so many things to experience and plenty of great food. Enjoy yourself!
