So in your experience how much did you pay the lawyer for your divorces?
No two situations are the same. In each of my divorces, there was a strong desire on each side to dissolve the marriage, but there was no animosity... folks were adults. Settlements were fair. Lawyers on each side were professional, who got the job done with nothing being drawn out. There was no court time. The fee was quite reasonable, less than three large, including costs. My lawyer was one of the best in the business.

If folks who are divorcing are irrational then the process gets drawn out, and time costs money. Then you are into the big bills.

3. if the opposing party does not respond, the divorce can proceed...
Yes, but only if and when the spouse has been served the Writ of Summons. This is where it can get tricky. If the party has vanished, or is out of the country, then costly delays ensue. This becomes even more complicated if there are dependents, and/or the estranged one has absconded with the matrimonial assets. In that case, the process can drag on interminably much to the detriment of the plaintiff. Large assets make it easy to pick and choose any safe harbours, live quite comfortable there, change identities, and never be heard from again.
