Hey y'all. I have a hot date lined up for this evening and need a last-minute idea where to go for some great food/great atmosphere. I know a few places, Bierkraft being a favourite. But are there any good places in the Vancouver area you girls/guys know of? Thanks!

Criteria:

-good food
-casual atmosphere
-not pretentious
-no Cactus Club type place; I want to look at my date, not at the waitress

Try La Bodega on Howe st and Drake. Great food (Spanish Tapas), lots of character, waitresses that are 6s at best and Sangria to die for.

Near the water
I really like Miku near the Convention Centre. There's lots of high-end Japanese restaurants in this city but they have a particular flair to their cooking. They do a lot of dishes where the food is seared and it really brings out the flavours. I'd recommend leaving your menu in their hands - ask them to bring what they feel is good. Give them a price range, of course!

Any suggestions for Italian? My favourite restaurant closed so I'm in need of suggestions....nothing like Cioppino's where you have to mortgage your left nut for some pasta.....

I have eaten there many times and consistently good food and service. Always fresh and they seem to get excellent seafood at all times of the year. Not necessarily a typical Italian restaurant but they do have pasta dishes etc on the menu. They have an excellent patio within their walls so you won't hear any traffic.

Mainly male waiters ;)

Stepho's Greek restaurant on Davie Street. The food is highly authentic and it is a sexy and awesome atmosphere.

Cibo Trattoria along Seymour at the Moda Hotel. It was the only one from Vancouver as Canada's Best New Restaurant ( EnRoute Magazine ) in 2009 and the WOW consistency remains. Plus, it has a pretty extensive wine list even though there's a good wine bar beside it.

The food is great, I order take out from there once a week. The atmosphere is a disaster, specially that there's always a line up a block long and you can't make reservations (last i checked)

Nice thanks! Tried a sushi joint at Miyako Sushi on Pender than went to Salt Tasting Room in Blood Alley in Gastown. Sushi is always great when well-made and Salt was cool; just a chill place to chat with the lady and have some meat, bread and wine. Plus it's next to Blood Alley aka historic murder sites which are always fascinating. Thanks for the suggestions!

Downtown Vancouver
Chambar on Beatty street is a top place in my books, extensive beer list and all the staff are excellent at parings.

For steak, there's Black & Blue by Glowbal, and on that note Sanafir mentioned previously is on my list as well, is also a Glowbal property. Come to think of it, all their places are pretty good :)

Vera's burgers is amazing, and I love Steamrollers too. Not sure if you'd consider them restaurants but you can eat in.

There are good sushi places all over downtown. I used to eat Sushi before she moved back to Japan.

I used to like Sanafir but it's become quite the douchebag central last few years and it's terribly pretentious (to me at least!). Recommendations:
- in Gastown, Pourhouse, Diamond, Guilt & Co (new) or L'Abbatoir. Pourhouse has a great vibe though it is expensive
- in D/T / Yaletown Cibo is good - fancy but my read isn't that it is pretentious. Also Bodega as previously mentioned.
- Main / Cambie / Fraser area: Habit Lounge / Cascade Room, Campagnolo, Pied a Terre are some choices.

liquid city
Kingyo on Davie
Bibo (?sp) on west fourth for fine italian atmosphere and deadly pizza-great for a first date to impress
Bao Bei (?sp) chinatown by the night market
L'Abattoir Possibly the best of all of them.
The Keefer on Keefer for desert donuts and dip mmmm
Rodneys for oysters in yaletown
Flying pig if you love brussel sprouts like I do, or a red eye on Sunday morning!!
