I drive Hwy 1 through the Rockies to Alberta frequently. Most of the guys in the ditch are either rigs or guys with 4 wheel drives. They get overconfident and end up in the ditch. I was a "jeep guy" for a long time. I rarely drove in 4 wheel drive on the highway. I figured if you can do 100 km per hour you don't need to be in 4x4. You spin out in a car and you might straighten out. You spin out in 4x4 and you're going in the ditch and maybe on your roof. 4 wheel drive doesn't help you slow down any faster.

The real cluster fuck for driving is when heavy snow hits the Coq. Guys don't chain up or don't have snow tires, they get halfway up the hill and start sliding sideways or backward. That happens on Hwy 93 coming off Number 1 in Alberta too (a frequent bypass of the never ending avalanche that is Field BC). Personally I think the worst area to drive in the Lower Mainland is Number 1 starting around Abbotsford. Never ending rain, 2 lanes, constant merging and no flow to the traffic.
I followed an oil tanker with no chains up the switchbacks on Hwy 3 east of Osoyoos one day when it was freezing rain and the highway was sheer ice. I was too afraid to try to pass him, so had to follow and hope he didn't slide back into me.

Another scary drive is the Hope-Princeton when trucks don't chain up between Hope and Princeton. I was sad to hear the driver died who went off the road near Manning Park.

Ah ... memories. I'm homesick for BC.

As I write this we are experiencing dropping temperatures with snow, rain, freezing rain, hail and a thunder storm with high winds for good measure. Blizzard and winter storm warning are up.

Southern Manitoba can be challenging in March.

I am one of those victoria drivers.
Well not really , born and raised there but I manage fine in the snow with what ever car or truck I had.

I just go out andrinking practice when ever we got snow to find out what my limitations were with me and the car.

I did manage to get some experience when I spent 3 winter up in MacKenzie.that seemed to be the time I liked to go up there.
And most of those years I drove up and down 4 or 5 time in the winter months. I loved the drives.

Had a few hair rating experiences on the coke and a late night run on the high way from Kamloops to vanderhof.
Was stuck driving the snow Rutts on the highway with a semi chasing me all the way .Could not find a place to turnoff because of the snow banks
After that I stop driving that route at night and stopped trying to do the 12 hr by driving all night .

But I never had any problems in the snow just had to watch for moose on the side of the high way .
.
There nothing like that down herevery just have to watch for the other nut on the road with bald ties and don't know to put their Trans in first or low when trying to start on hill .generally you can get going of you don't gun it

This shit that we have had is nothing ....I remember when it was bla bla bla....lol

Oh and yes I was driving 4X4 when in snow or slippery condition that's what it's..Most of the new vehical that have all wheel drive and on the fly 4 wheel are great .but you still have to know their limits and your own .
Shitty roads is not a place for doing 90 and 100 kh when most are doing under 80 or even 70.

Just respect the conditions and other people choose to drive slower

I think I remember you texting me during some of your long winter drives. :)

I miss driving up in northern BC, even in the winter.

The newer 4 wheel drive systems are nice. I remember I had old Jeeps and you had to get out and lock the wheels or something like that. A lot of these new SUV's are front wheel drive & they're decent in the snow and their front/back weight is balanced pretty good.

I don't find the Coke that bad though it has it's moments. It's going east past Kamloops where it gets to one lane and not a lot of passing lanes. The road is winding around the Shuswap & then the bad weather usually starts. The plus is there is cell phone service along almost all of the highway now.

This has been a terrible terrible winter. I imagine some rich people here recently from Asia might be thinking of leaving or at least just live here April to late September.
Do you question why rich people stick around during winter here? Whats to like about the area? I can't name too many things going for it.

Where are the cherry blossoms? I'm getting impatient.
So that's why when you ride in my car you hang on to the "holy shit handles" and have this look of fear in your eyes. And I don't get lost either *wink*.

OK, I know where the "holy shit handle" on the right is - where is the one on the left?

Honestly, I can't remember, because it was a rental car at the time ;-). On the way back into Van I got stopped by the RCMP because I shot by an RCMP while it was snowing. I politely explained I learned to drive in a more "wintery" climate. And you've just reminded me, I forgot to pay my bridge tolls. Fuck, it's probably $300 dollars now.

Lol the bridges are my biggest worry with the snow, if it closes I am literally stuck on the other side and late for whatever I am trying to get to.

You're not set up for automatic payment? I remember having my credit card expire and not having the correct email set up to notify and it building up 250+ dollars over a year or something.

Was a rental car. If I travel distances I rent cars. The cost is lower than using your own car and saves putting thousands of km's on my own car. I don't mind driving in the snow at all. I pass through the Coke frequently through brutal weather. I prefer it to driving in the rain in Vancouver. Fee paid too.
