I followed an oil tanker with no chains up the switchbacks on Hwy 3 east of Osoyoos one day when it was freezing rain and the highway was sheer ice. I was too afraid to try to pass him, so had to follow and hope he didn't slide back into me.I drive Hwy 1 through the Rockies to Alberta frequently. Most of the guys in the ditch are either rigs or guys with 4 wheel drives. They get overconfident and end up in the ditch. I was a "jeep guy" for a long time. I rarely drove in 4 wheel drive on the highway. I figured if you can do 100 km per hour you don't need to be in 4x4. You spin out in a car and you might straighten out. You spin out in 4x4 and you're going in the ditch and maybe on your roof. 4 wheel drive doesn't help you slow down any faster.
The real cluster fuck for driving is when heavy snow hits the Coq. Guys don't chain up or don't have snow tires, they get halfway up the hill and start sliding sideways or backward. That happens on Hwy 93 coming off Number 1 in Alberta too (a frequent bypass of the never ending avalanche that is Field BC). Personally I think the worst area to drive in the Lower Mainland is Number 1 starting around Abbotsford. Never ending rain, 2 lanes, constant merging and no flow to the traffic.
Another scary drive is the Hope-Princeton when trucks don't chain up between Hope and Princeton. I was sad to hear the driver died who went off the road near Manning Park.
Ah ... memories. I'm homesick for BC.
