Farrah Fawcett Tackles New Challenge: Cancer
October 4, 2006

Farrah Fawcett has always touted she’s up for any obstacle thrown her way. But now, the legendary TV darling is facing the challenge of her life.

The ageless icon is waging a brave battle against intestinal cancer. "Extra" has learned the "Charlie’s Angel" has been undergoing radiation treatment as she prepares for surgery and chemotherapy.

Despite this harrowing time, just two days ago Farrah and her former flame, Ryan O’Neal, were working out together at his gym in Los Angeles.

Ryan was often seen on her reality show, "Chasing Farrah," and he fought his own battle with leukemia in 2001.

Farrah’s devastating cancer news came just after an emotional "Charlie’s Angels" surprise reunion at the Emmy Awards in late August.

Backstage, Farrah’s fellow angel Kate Jackson told "Extra" about their precious 30-year friendship.

"Farrah and I are gorilla-glued at the hip," Kate said.

In a bizarre twist, both Kate and Jaclyn Smith have also battled cancer, but the beautiful Kate told us her secret to surviving the tough times.

"As long as you are healthy and you have love in your life, you are fine," she shared.

"Extra" has also discovered there’s a new angel in Farrah’s life: none other than Katie Couric, whose husband died of colon cancer.

We’ve learned Katie is working behind the scenes to help Farrah get the best doctors and the best treatment.

Ironically, back in the ‘80s, Farrah was the spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. Tragically, her older sister died of lung cancer in 1998.

And just recently, the beautiful blonde told us how much living a healthy lifestyle means to her.

"When I work out, it makes me eat healthier," Farrah shared.

We wish Farrah nothing but good health on her rapid road to recovery, and she is asking the public respect her privacy as she goes through this emotional healing process.

Interesting article and perspective. Certainly sorry to see Farrah suffering a painful death at a relatively young age. Do kind of wonder if even facing death her desire for media coverage and her last fifteen minutes of fame is driving this macabre spectacle.

And no big surprise the "celebrity" media are on it like vultures on a corpse...no pun intended.

I read an article about what she is doing on the NY Post yesterday. She is actually filming what she is going through and doesn't have long to live. You will be able to watch the whole thing if you want. I wish her luck in her battle but I will not watch her dying on TV. This is not something I need to see. I'm interested to see how others feel about this. If you've had friends or loved ones go through this, I don't think it's something you want to relive. Just my thoughts.

separate from your concerns Hubba...

but does anybody see the irony in an article about the pandering and sensationalism of one's death...

written by a two-bit journalist who happens to write for one of the world's premier tabloid rags...

go figure...

I agree with you, having lost a couple of loved ones myself to cancer. However, just throwing this out there, maybe she feels like telling her story can give her life some meaning or provide inspiration for others. Or maybe she's doing it to make some money, which would be forgiveable if her medical bills are huge. Who knows how much money she's spent on treatment or how much money she still has left from her heyday.

Speaking of her heyday, here's the Farrah I want to remember. It's a little sad for us Gen-Xers that the people we idolized from our childhood are starting to pass on...

As I get older even as a guy I lust for the Fountain of Youth. When you are in your 20s you take that youth for granted.

They have stopped treating her and it's pallative now.

If you watched the show the other night, you could see footage taken only days ago of her jailed son allowed to visit her. She didn't recognize him and is sedated most of the time now so she's not in constant pain as the cancer kills her.

Very sad. I cried while watching it. Lost my Grandma to colon cancer last year and it was hard. :(

Brother, Farrah isn't really a Gen-X thing, more a baby boomer thing. I'm at the top end of Gen X & I was just a kid when she was it. She married the dude from 6 million dollar man or something like that and I wasn't that old when that happened.

The "Gen X" chicks prolly started around the time of Breakfast Club (the movie).
Defining generations is a fuzzy science at best, but if you will believe Time Magazine (http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1731528,00.html) as a source, they list Gen-X as being people born between 1965 and 1980. That would make the boys at the early end of the curve about 10-15 years old when the first run of "Charlie's Angels" came out, which means they were old enough to have the hots for Farrah and to remember this opening sequence:
