There is a big gap between going away soon, and lasting forever. I don't think it will go away soon.
As for lasting forever, that depends on what you meant by forever. Take measles as an example, we have very effective vaccine against measles, and for many years it was effectively eradicated in North America. However, the anti-vaccine idiots has allowed measles to make a come back in last few years.
Best case scenario, scientists develop an effective and safe vaccine that can be used by mass population in the next year. It will take another 6 months to a year to immunize the majority of world population. After that, there will be herd immunity and we will get pockets of infection from time to time. I don't want to talk about worst case scenarios right now.
