Yea, which is better for No Limit Texas Hold'em Poker?

Looking at stakes of 50 cent $1 or $1/$2

Looked at the time and River Rock is only 15 mins away because of the new Canada Line.

Pros and Cons anyone?

Thanks.

Also any other info would be appreciated.

I don't do the poker thing too much (More fun to PokeHer...:D) but I prefer River Rock for almost everything actually. That and some of the waitresses there are damn hot! :D

I prefer River Rock for Poker...just don't like the atmosphere at Edgewater. Customer service is not as good and Poker room is smaller, less tournaments. You won't find anything cheaper than $1/2 for no limit.

Check their websites for tournament schedules if you are into that.

Poker room as in walk and put down $50-$100 and cash out when ever you feel like it? Like a cash game. I don't really and can't really play tournaments yet so right now I am looking for the cash game type.

Starlight is good, not as competitive..and food's good
I would say River Rock is more friendly, not as intense

Apparently a lot of stupid people go to Edgewater Casino because I was talking to one of the dealers at Great Canadian Casino in Nanaimo and he/she said that he/she managed to loose $200 in one hand because someone split two 10's - who the fuck splits two 10's?!. Had they have not split the two tens the dealer would have busted.

I guess River Rock it is!

Oh and I am also trying to and hopping that this could pay off my pooning expenses lol

Kevin, are you good at Poker or just learning? If just learning I would recommend maybe starting out with the morning tournaments, they are inexpensive (about $30) and get you comfortable with the game. Although Tourney poker and cash do differ it will help you with how to play the hands (assuming you are a beginner).

Minimum buy in for $1/2 is $100. I would budget 2-3 buy-ins and don't go over that (as a way to budget yourself). Money management is a very important aspect of cash play (IMO) if you are doing it to make money. Set both a limit for yourself for both winnings and losings. IE, if you are willing to lose $200 (two short buy-ins) then also tell yourself that if you double your money (up $200) you will leave. Somedays you are just "on" and getting lucky with the cards so maybe you would stretch that but never let your stack drop below it.

(If you are experienced then please skip all above info!!).

Good luck!

Oppai, I think I do pretty well at Texas Hold 'em Poker - no limit. I have been playing the game for about 2-3years with friends and cousins so I do know the hands and I know when to bluff and know when to fold'em.

Yea I agree with you money management is importent if you do want to make a profit. I only have 3.5hrs at both casino's before I have to go home. I think I will set my limit to 2 buy ins and walk with profit of $200. That is a good day for me.

Here on the island, well in Nanaimo we only have The Great Candian Casinos and they don't have a good selection of table games. Black jack, Texas hold'em bonus and two other games. I am looking for strictly Texas Hold'em No Limit Poker. However, I do enjoy play Texas Hold'em Bonus and Blackjack times to time but I am learning the game play of Black jack. Ex, when to hit and stand etc.

stop-loss=stop win, don't limit yourself by the money you win or lose, instead play if you think you have an edge on the players. home games are generally different because people tend to bluff more, goto library get a poker book and study it first before you go play, casino cash games is a bit more than just tells. i find edgewater pretty soft in the mornings :p starlight is fishy too but the bright lights affects my game.

Kevin101, keep in mind that RiverRock is also a Great Canadian Casino. Edgewater is not. But River Rock has Texas Hold'em Bonus whereas Edgewater doesn't.

If you are referring to the bad beat jackpot, the Edgewater does have one and its currently the largest one in the Lower Mainland at around $120,000.00 right now.

Otherwise Im not certain what you mean by bonus unless you are referring to some kind of table game in the regular casino room like Texas Shootout.
The OP mentioned that he sometimes played table games including Texas Hold'em Bonus (a table game which great canadian casinos have but edgewater does not).

Edgewaters Badbeat is over $130,000 right now, soon to be won by ME! (or lost....you know!).

Well thanks for all the information but has anyone gone to Edgewater or River Rock in the morning to play cash game No Limit Texas Hold'em Poker yet?

Is it really slow? Is there even anyone that plays in the morning or is all the action in the evening?

I am expected to arrive at River Rock and Edgewater Casino at 11:45AM.

at edgewater, It's better early mornings to play with the seniors, there is usually 1-2 table, half of them seniors, half of them tired winners/losers from the night before. then there is mama, swearing in cantonese about how much she is losing. :D don't expect much action, but it's a soft game, you win playing solid abc.

Ah ha ha!! Mama...I love it. She's such a spaz. I only played with her two or three times but she will change tables or purposefully not play in a hand with me because each time she played me I beat her and took all her money. The dealer said she called me a turtle or something to that effect.

I've never played RR in the morning but 11:45 should have both places in full swing. You get all the tourney losers getting into the cash games.

Call in to the Rock before you go. RR has changed their hours and now actually closes. I believe new games start up at between 11am and noon.

Be aware that playing in a casino is a very different environment than playing home games. And playing cash games is very, very different than playing in a tournament.

In home games, your competition is usually weaker, and playing against smaller fields (most home games are between 6-8 players) where most casino games are up to 10. This changes the dynamic of the game and positional play and hand selection are much more important. In home games, there are also more people (at least a few) who are there for the social aspect. At the casino, there may be a few, but most are trying to take your stack.

Also, in tourneys, you are limited to a buy in. If it is $50, then that is all you can loose. So if you call 3000 chips with top pair, you can only lose $50. In a cash game, you stand to lose much, much more.

My suggestion is go check it out. Play the $1-2 cash game and see how you do. I would limit yourself to 2 buy-ins. Get a feel for the game. Chances are there will be 1 or 2 "beginners", 2-6 players with experience but not that good, and 2-4 solid players. If you are just starting, basically your goal should be play against the weaker players and avoid the solid players. You should be able to tell in the first 4-6 hands who these players are. If you can, sit down in late position and wait til your blind to play. Watch the way the hands are played and get a sense as to who the stronger and weaker players are. Leave if you feel you can't beat the game or you are up enough.

1. This is a blackjack story
2. One person playing one hand of blackjack foolishly is not really a good reason to play poker at that casino.
3. While not a high % move splitting 1010 against a dealer's 6 is -EV, but not psychotic (splitting 5s, which I have seen people do at the Riverrock is idiotic).
4. FWIW, I have found that the play at the Edgewwater is weaker on weekend eveings where the crowd is much more interested in killing time before/after drinking/clubbing
5. The RR, IMHO, has better trained dealers, a bigger, brighter, high-ceilinged room. better food, better service, and more tables.
6. For lower limit games, I would say the Edgewater crowd is easier to beat, on average. the higher limit games is a wash since they tend to have the same players.

Good luck.

well, if you are thinking to "invest" your money in the casino to have more pooning cash
I would suggest saving :)
before I always thought, sure, poker's fair and if I play safe, it's a sure sure thing
but when you are having a bad day, you may end up not having one single winning hand in 2 hours, or got bad beats..

the only game that's bit more fair is Baccarat
