Dumb-looking visors

As I drive around Richmond on sunny days, I see people wearing these frickin' huge clear plastic visors pulled down low over their face like a welder's mask or something. WTF is up with that? Is this a recent trend? Will it (please) go away soon? Why can't people just wear sunglasses?

It's not recent, it started last summer. It's not about the sun in their eyes, they wear those goofy things for the same reason they carry an umbrella on a sunny day, to prevent getting a tan. I have two suggestions on this...wear sunscreen and if you must use an umbrella, make it a rice paper parasol, black nylon umbrellas are just as stupid as the welders mask thing.

Longer than that, DW. I remember some Korean shops on North Road in Coquitlam selling them about seven years past, while I was still a married man... Who knows? They were probably in Asia's night markets well before that... :)

Yeah those sure look stupid. I even saw somebody wearing one while driving. That really pissed me off.... couldn't tell where they were looking and what they were going to do next - it was a traffic hazard to be sure.

Anyway, if they want to shield their faces from the sun, they should do it the traditional way they did in the Far East:

May be different culture, but skin cancer does not descriminate by race, color, or nationality. Take it from someone who has lived through it. They are simply playing it safe, assuming the visors protect them from the rays.

as DW said, wear sun screen. driving in Richmond is dangerous enough without having to avoid people wearing this things while driving! don't get me started; yesterday I had someone (we won't mention ethnicity) at No.2 and Westminster cut from the right hand turn lane to the left hand turn lane on the north side of the intersection facing south. that's 3 lanes of traffic they cut across, AFTER the light just turned green!

You guys think driving in Richmond is bad, just imagine what's it like driving in China!!!! Remember a few decades ago they rode bicycles, you don't see bicycles as much, now they've got cars.

What still gets me is what's with the "Sars" Masks and wearing white gloves?

It's about time that the Chinese mentality of living like hermits cut off from the rest of the world be shed. This is unbecoming of a nation about to become the next superpower. They should look at how the rest of the world lives and pay attention. For example: excessive spitting, picking nose in public, horking in public, popping zits in public, wearing face visors behind the wheel, yelling in close public quarters, poor restaurant sanitation, jumping queues, cutting down trees in a neighborhood full of them, driving without adequate attention to rules, lousy attitudes from waitresses, abuse of city bylaws.... you name it, if there's a courtesy rule to be broken it's done in the name of cultural difference. Now don't get me wrong, the Chinese are a great people and civilization. They have much to be proud of in the world's history. Few other peoples can make the same remarkable claims that the Chinese can. Yet Canada is a place of tolerance, where the responsibility to live harmoniously is upon all citizens - not just the majority.

I'm inclined to agree with you GBM. I live in east Vancouver and have very nice Chinese neighbours on both sides, (and all up and down the street). In fact being Caucasian, I am a visible minority here. We get along very well with our neighbours. But I am disgusted to see the type of behaviours you describe on a regular basis as I travel around town. I was grossed out by a chinese lady waiting at a bus stop the other day as she was sending 2 snot rockets (one from each nostril), right in front of a lot of other people who just looked at each other in disgust. It is high time they adopted a bit more courtesy on the road, on the sidewalk, everywhere and try to blend in better with their fellow citizens.

Yup....tend to agree with the two posts above, but am afraid of sounding "racist"...glad you guys said it before me!! :)
On driving: when in a large Korean city, I marveled at the many intersections W/O STOP SIGNS OR TRAFFIC LIGHTS!! It was enough to make any Westerner poop his pants!

I'm happy to hear you beat skin cancer Mike. However, I don't think asians are wearing them to protect against skin cancer, it's more about keeping the prized milky white skin. Traditionally, it's proof that they are affluent and don't work in the fields. Ironically, here in north america, a deep tan suggests a life of leisure. Afternoons spent on the tennis court or golf course and weekends boating.

you should read Norber Elias' "The Civilizing Process" ... great book that covers the whole premise of 'civilized' ... it wasn't that long ago that our 'western' civilization was a merry-band of nose-picking, spitting, hawking, honking, horking, farting, defecating, urinating bunch of morons ...

and to be honest, i still see lotsa 'whiteys' doing the exact same things as the Chinese! i just think we pay a lot more attention to what someone different is doing

I think I'll check out that book, thanks!

Yes, it was not long ago that Europeans acted like total barbarians. Was it not the Japanese who taught the Dutch about bathing? The Chinese taught the world about civil government, I believe, which is why they were termed "Mandarins". Nevertheless, the Western world now does lead in sanitizing customs (though I believe to the point of paranoia about germs). I've counted now three times this year I saw an Asian mother take a small child outside (in front of) a Chinese restaurant to urinate/defecate publicly. I can't say if they were Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Malay/Philippino/Thai/whatever, but that kind of stuff is really classless. On the other hand, we often see Caucasian guys liqored up and pissing publicly, sometimes in broad daylight (I saw some idiot do that on W.Broadway right in front of London Drugs). I've yet to see an Asian do that.

I think we are seeing an influx of immigrants from less industrialised parts of Asia who have taken their country mannerisms to our cities. Some of these work at micros and AMPs and their understanding of germs and hygiene leave a lot to be desired, but have resulted in high mileage for pooners. I think guys ought to think twice about why an Asian girl is so enthusiastic about rimming, for example. It's only because they are basically country folk ignorant about disease.

As it pains me to say...I agree with Bush here.

I am chinese born and raised in Vancouver and the shit I see in Chinatown just gross me out.

I see these 70 year old man horking and shootin snot outta there nose on the streets where there is fruit produce on display. That shit just can't be clean. About 2 months ago, my dad and I almost got smoked by a chinese lady wearing that stupid visor and she must of missed the red light.

Sad to say but majority of the people that have imigrated from China/Hong Kong has brought over their bad habits. And I wish Rich Asian parents stop buying their inexperienced kids those fucking rice rockets. I swear...Isee all these young asian kids in a Type R with a big fucking N on their cars ripping 160km on cambie road!!! I really just want to side swipe them into a pole sometimes when I see shit like that.

some still do ... :)

and i am all for cleanliness and manners and consideration no matter where
someone is 'from' ... a lot of the locals around here have none, and its a long drive before you find anyone who is a 'visible minority'!

i think you will get a kick out of Elias' book ... should be available at the library ... you can skip the whole 'sociogenesis' chapter and dive right into the stuff on 'nose picking' etc ... some of it is so 'over-the-top' that you may skip a few meals after reading about 'table manners'.

the main thing to remember about some asian cultures is that they are based on the 'mind your own business' framework: so even when you see someone doing something gross, you are expected to act like it doesn't exist because if there are 10 of you crammed into one room, its difficult to do anything else but ignore it.

us westerners have instead built a room for every need ... we have a 'living' room, a kitchen, a 'bathroom' and bedrooms for everyone! not that long ago Europeans were all sharing one bed, one 'night pot' beside the kitchen stove and all the animals in one room.

now many of us have a whole bloody house to ourselves!

GB, If I remember correctly from history class, it was the Chinese that introduced bathing.

I love different cultures.
I've always worn socks, sometimes barefoot when I'm home. My friend in Nova Scotia who's originally from England would have worn shoes at home, he's says that's the norm from where's he's from. Whenever I go to any of my asian friend's home, I've always been offered slippers by their mothers. Isn't that nice and civil.
