For example: excessive spitting, picking nose in public, horking in public, popping zits in public, wearing face visors behind the wheel, yelling in close public quarters, poor restaurant sanitation, jumping queues, cutting down trees in a neighborhood full of them, driving without adequate attention to rules, lousy attitudes from waitresses, abuse of city bylaws.... you name it, if there's a courtesy rule to be broken it's done...

And therein lies the problem. Tell the fucker TO HIS/HER FACE when it happens. They're possibly too ignorant to know what they're doing, in which case, telling them will enlighten them (provided they understand you) and possibly prevent them from doing it again in the future. The best approach is to stress the "no class" stigma attached to the act.

I think you've nailed it. The majority of asia is based on a class society. It's all about creating the illusion of success. It reminds me of an asian friend I went to college with that lived with his entire family, like 12 people in one small apartment, they lived on rice and fish, and spent the majority of their money on the Mercedes (which they shared) and nice clothes.

...I've counted now three times this year I saw an Asian mother take a small child outside (in front of) a Chinese restaurant to urinate/defecate publicly. I can't say if they were Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Malay/Philippino/Thai/whatever, but that kind of stuff is really classless. On the other hand, we often see Caucasian guys liqored up and pissing publicly, sometimes in broad daylight (I saw some idiot do that on W.Broadway right in front of London Drugs). I've yet to see an Asian do that...

When I was in Manila, it was very common to see guys get up from a sidewalk canteen and walk across the street to piss on the wall. Nobody batted an eye.

Singapore has its public hygiene act together

SINGAPORE (AP) — Singapore, famous for its spotless streets, is stepping up its campaign against filth in the restroom with a training program to boost the status and skills of the city-state's toilet cleaners, a newspaper reported Thursday.

More than 50 toilet cleaners will be promoted to "restroom specialist" upon completing the three-day pilot course taught by Japanese experts in the latest toilet technology, The Straits Times reported.

The program — sponsored by the city-state's National Trades Union Congress and the Singapore-based World Toilet College — aims to boost the image and wages of professional toilet cleaners by training them to do more on the job, The Straits Times reported.

The college has flown in three top Japanese trainers to conduct the course on improving cleaning techniques and technical expertise to the initial group of 51 cleaners.

"The plan is to expand the pilot course to a 64-hour one, after which trainees will be certified as `restroom specialists,'" the article said.

"Cleaners have low morale and low skills," the paper quoted Jack Sim, the World Toilet College's founder, as saying. "We want to professionalize them and teach them to be proud of their jobs."

Sim said he plans to train all 5,000 toilet cleaners in the tiny city-state and raise their average monthly wage to $598 US from the previous $472.

This cleanliness-obsessed country has launched a number of campaigns to improve the city-state's toilets.

In November last year, the government released new guidelines for public toilet usage to cut down on long lines at women's restrooms. It has also published maps to Singapore's 500 cleanest public toilets, and awarded "five-star" or "Happy Toilet" ratings to those with spic-and-span interiors.

Further to this, I remember seeing these public urinals spotted all over the city as well. I guess the pissin'-on-a-wall thing drove them to install a bunch of them.
Sometimes I wish we had the fuckers here. They could put them up instead of those stupid fuckin' bear statues that are infesting the city.
