Dream Vacation

I've been thinking of taking a vacation sometime soon.

The problem is I'll only have about a week and I've 'been there, done that' for a lot of places. Most of the places I still want to go and see would require more than just a week to be worth going (like going on an african safari or something).

Money isn't really an issue (no, I don't want to spend a week on the ISS), I have a big enough budget for anything that isn't just burning money for the sake of burning money.

Timeframe is around the end of April or early May

What would YOU do in this situation? Ideas?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from the women as I might offer to bring along a sugar babe.

Perhaps you should ask your ladyfriend what she would like

Tastes are all so personal - and without knowing what interests you, it is impossible to provide a short list beyond the cliches.

So....here are some cliches:

Paris in the Spring is always beautiful.
Italy or Southern France can make for a romantic getaway.
Close sunshine and beaches - Hawaii, Carribean, Mexico
Spa destinations if you want to make her happy.
Many cruises are one week long.
New Zealand (Auckland) and Australia (Sydney) now have direct flights from Vancouver which don't make them any less desirable for a short visit than Europe is.

It really just boils down to whether you are looking for a sunny escape, culture, pampering, relaxation, adventure, wine tasting etc.

I still think your best bet if you are wanting to make a good impression is going to be to ask her for her ideas.

If you only have a week, why not go to the States? There are tonnes of cool places to go and things to do other than the Empire State Building. For example:

-Go horseback riding through the hills of Montana!

-Rent a convertible and drive through the desert highways of Nevada. Eat at roadside diners and pretend you're in a movie!

-Rent a camper and travel through Big Bend National Park in Texas. Have bonfires, see cactus, foxes and owls!

-Travel through the swampland and visit the old plantations of the Deep South! See an alligator!

-Drive though California and visit all the ghost towns of the gold rushes!

I did ask... the answer I got was:

"Sure I'll come along if it's somethng fun"

When I asked her what she thought would be fun, her answer was "Something interesting and new"

Basically she's saying that if I come up with something that interests her, she's in.

Been to Hawaii a zillion times, don't want to lose 2 days travelling each way so lots of europe, africa, the middle east or australia is out.

Also not a ton of time to get travel visas so it would have to be somewhere that accepts just passports from Canada.

Done the mexico thing quite a few times.

A cruise might be interesting, maybe a repositioning cruise from hawaii to vancouver if the timing is right. Wouldn't want to be on an 'old people' boat where there's nothing to do but play bridge though...

There are lots of cool places in Canada. Quebec City and Montreal are both great in the spring as is Banff.

If you really must leave the country Belize is quite reasonable and safe and so is Cuba.

In my house
What about Cuba?
Maybe start by going to Havana and spending a few days there and enjoying the history of the place...then going to Varadero for a week and enjoying a luxurious resort?

Beyond Mexico: Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Nicaragua. All with interesting features beyond beaches and umbrella drinks. Weather in this area at that time of the year may be warmer and more humid, but it is always cooler at higher elevations (Antigua, Chichicastenango, or Panajachel in Guatemala, for example)

I think Cuba would be a great choice.. especially as it will never be the same soon.. see it now before the US invades.
