If you have Windows Update or Microsoft Update (WU only updates Windows, MU updates Windows and MS Applications) set to automatically download and install, you may want to rethink your choice.

The "bad patch" was IE7. Neither WU or MU will let you click the "never offer this update again" box. IE7 is probably just fine for your kid's computer. If you have to go to a lot of secure sites or password sites, IE7 is not for you. If you run a secure site and allow IE7, well, how's a week down grab you? IE7 overwrites the files for the previous version of IE and when you uninstall, the previous version's files are not restored. You have to rebuild your OS image.

Microsoft is going to succeed in driving us all to Linux with this kind of shit.

Yesterday I was checking for updates manually as I thought Windows wasn't respecting the new daylight savings time. One of the critical "patches" I noticed was some "genuine windows notification" thing. Basically it will check if your version of windows is authentic and supposedly just nag you if it isn't until you rectify the situation.

Now my copy is authentic, it came on my machine I got from a big box. However, I have so little faith in technology to not screw up and screw me over. Like what good could this patch ever do for me? I'm not having a problem now, but I might if I install it. So today now my machine has downloaded the patch and is just waiting for me to install the critical update, but I would normally have never known this patch was one of them as I just click OK. I'm sure it will keep hassling me until I install it. Bastards.

They've changed WU and MSU so that you don't get the updates unless you've installed the Windows Genuine Advantage. You also can no longer download all the updates so that you can do a clean install with all updates installed before connecting to the internet. That's a real pain because it means you have to have a Anti Virus Program and a Malware blocker active while you are still trying for a stable OS.

When did this happen? Last week Wednesday I installed a clean "backup" of Windows XP PRO SP2 Corporate Edition on an old computer. After installation I checked the box to download updates, but manually install option, popped in the LAN cable and downloaded the new Windows Installer. Rebooted and then the installer listed 41 patches to be downloaded. The 39th one was Windows Genuine Advantage, so I immediately unchecked it. So far so good. Did they change the policy recently?

You validated your Windows before you went to MS Update, right? OK, just saw the Corporate, your version may not work the same way as the Retail Version works.
