If you have Windows Update or Microsoft Update (WU only updates Windows, MU updates Windows and MS Applications) set to automatically download and install, you may want to rethink your choice.

The "bad patch" was IE7. Neither WU or MU will let you click the "never offer this update again" box. IE7 is probably just fine for your kid's computer. If you have to go to a lot of secure sites or password sites, IE7 is not for you. If you run a secure site and allow IE7, well, how's a week down grab you? IE7 overwrites the files for the previous version of IE and when you uninstall, the previous version's files are not restored. You have to rebuild your OS image.
