I'm not defending this person. Joke or no joke he should've known better especially in his position. I quote the story on the exact situation and the apology (if it's a real one or not I don't know).

"According to members of the audience that day, Sharma asked the women in the room to stand in honour of International Women's Day, but then after a round of applause told them to "go clean some rooms and do some dishes."

Sharma issued a public apology after the comments came to light, saying he "deeply" regretted his "insensitive and inappropriate comments," and then resigned from his positions on the boards of the Tourism Industry Association of B.C., the B.C. Hotel Association and the B.C. Chamber of Commerce."

.
There are arguments made that a joke is just a joke.
Then a counter to that is sometimes hate, discrimination and other negatives are hidden in the joke.

Coming off the Will and Chris (not trying to discuss that)......My point is where is the line between being just a joke vs being an asshole. I'm not a fan of cancel culture but I understand some people have earned being cancelled. This is a tough one, thoughts?

We all make mistakes and some are bigger then others.

Women get one friggin day to be celebrated in this male-centric world and the guy chooses to drop a stupid joke? He deserves to be fired for being stupid and insensitive.

I’m going to take a wild guess that the only folks crying over this, cancel culture, etc are guys….

….Who can go fuck themselves. Rant complete.

Yes, deserved to be fired, but only to protect the company. I believe a joke is just a joke too, and those women need to get thicker skin, but with the precedent being set on the matter, he had to lose his job or the company would've faced millions in reparations. It's just the way it is. I wouldn't interpret this as some kind of noble 'heroic' act delivered by the company, because they are believers in the cause....they just don't want to get sued to oblivion.

Shocking lack of intelligence and judgement. I'd fire him if it was my decision for those two reasons alone.
Could not agree more. I mean there is stupid then there is that asshole!

Totally agree that he should be fired.
Yes, we all make mistakes and there should be a process towards redemption in the future, etc. Yet, this is not "cancel culture", to indulge that line of thought is a deflection; there are grievance procedures in place in most organizations which clearly define that sort of behaviour and they have been in place before people even coined the terms "woke" or "cancel culture". Furthermore, for someone in a position of power to exhibit such a stunning lack of judgement should give pause as to how he got to his position in the first place.

PS: couldn't find any actual footage of the incident, so if anyone has a link I'd be curious to see it. Sure, context is everything; at face value, the joke was awkward & lame, but who said it, had they said similar things in the past, was this a "serious" event or more of a "roast", etc., all come into play.
Plus, there is also a cultural context: is he an immigrant or Canadian-born? A little latitude should be shown if the former - maybe a suspension and obligatory "sensitivity training" - but if he's the latter he knows the rules and can't have it both ways.
The organization made the decision to fire him, so we are just armchair quarterbacking anyway...

There are a lot of talented people or people who are in the right place right time who are assholes that get into positions like this. Billy Cosby was immensely talented and look how it turned out when the truth drop or the countless CEO's, doctors, etc who have done vile stuff. It's sad that so many people in power do things like this.

No.
It doesn’t matter what you think, what matters is what the women think.
Ridiculing people like this encourages and empowers similar behaviour from others.
It’s not okay to harass and insult vulnerable people.
Bullying says a lot about the person doing it.
Suck up, kick down isn’t a good thing.

"According to members of the audience
Sounds like this was a prepared speech. He had time to write it, time to think about it, and still thought it was a clever thing to say?
It looks like this is really the way he thinks, and his apology was forced bullshit.
There are arguments made that a joke is just a joke.
There’s also the Schrodinger’s Douchebag argument: someone who says something ignorant then looks around to see the reaction.
If everyone laughs he laughs too, if everyone glares at him he goes the “It was just a joke” route.

The guy seems to have a habit of saying stupid sexist things. He said to a crowd of employees something like ' You just need to lay down, take it and enjoy it.' back in 2016 at Sun peaks resort about a woman if she ever gets raped ... He was supposedly trying to motivate his employees after a tough holiday season.

He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer or he's socially dumb. Either way since it's a habit of his to say stupid things in public he deserves to loose his job.

He didn't get fired, he resigned. And it wasn't a job, it was positions on boards. Of course, if he hadn't resigned he would have been asked to leave. He is the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort CEO and he has been placed on leave from that job. I don't see him returning given the nature of his statements and the leadership role he holds.

Honestly it’s just a bad joke, it’s not funny? What is the punchline can you really sit here and explain to me why this joke is funny? It’s outdated and cringey. People who still use this kind of lazy “shock” humour are disguising their misogyny by deflecting their true intentions and refusing any backlash or repercussions of their tasteless opinions by “it’s a joke”

I’m not gonna punch your baby in the face and then be like “hey bro it’s just a joke you can’t get mad”

YES THANK YOU! You basically summed up all my thoughts on this. It’s a bad joke for one, and as a person who lives in society in 2022 I think he knows exactly what he is doing he doesn’t live under a rock and say stupid shit deal with the consequences. 🤷‍♀️

To err is human, to forgive divine. Wonder why people aren't getting away with jokes these days? People are tired of that shit, so they rip a complaint out.
Comedy has always been about making people feel better about themselves. There are varying degrees of material being funny, from a mild joke to a the most offensive joke ever. Alot of the funny comedy is racist in nature, as that it puts a particular race/person in a lower light then you are; or talks about a situation that is abnormal. Which makes you feel better about yourself. Simple effective psychology. Do you laugh because you see the irony, or because it hurts, or because of relief that the joke not about you, or that the jokes gone way too far? People see humour in different lights. Its hit and miss.

The guy should of known better, but hubris probably made him say the joke anyway. The guy thought he was funny, and funny guys usually get away with shit. Who knows the guys thoughts prior to the joke. With the "Me Too" out in the public eye, saying any derogatory remarks about women is not a good thing, especially if its an taboo subject.

There is a very attractive man and a not so attractive man. So if either one of these men, out in public "make a pass" on a woman on her behind, who is most likely to get away with it?
Bloodletting- people seem to be out for it, despite the ban on violence.

Bit ironic to be ranting over such a joke on an escort review board. The joke isn’t any more insensitive to women than paying them to drop their pants.
There are no heros here, just guys willing to stick it in a hole without asking questions. Yes I’m guilty as charged, also though the joke was kinda funny.

I think the reaction is overblown (both the firing and the vitriol it has generated on this board) but hiring an escort is not insensitive to women, if anything it's empowering. It allows women to sell their body (beauty) just like men sell their body (strength, i.e., hard labor jobs). It gives them one more avenue to make their own money and not have to depend on any one man (e.g., husband, father) to survive.
