Do you own a gun and why.

But making a bomb ads a whole new layer of complication, is someone who is mentally unstable able to deal with the extra complication, sure some are but some are not. Plus there are more chances of things going wrong getting caught screwing up etc.
Trust me, making bombs is quite simple.

Yes I own a gun. It's for self protection in case of a natural disaster. Canadians riot over a hockey game. What do you think they'll do if there's an earthquake?
Just look at hurricane Katrina. I have often wondered what would happen here if a massive earthquake struck in the middle of winter.

If there is a natural disaster and you wander around with a gun, the cops/military will shoot you and ask questions later.
Don't wander around - just protect your stuff, if anyone comes around to take it.

No they won't. More than half the police will not be reporting to work because they'll want to take care of their own families. You don't wander around if disaster strikes unless you have to. You stay at home. The military will be busy with trying to provide food, water and damage control.

My aunt went through the Montreal ice storm. The military didn't seize any weapons. She said some people had their generators stolen because they had no way of stopping thieves.

if they can't use a gun they'll pick up a big rock and kill with that if they want to kill somebody
yeah but its going to be hard to pick up a big rock and kill twenty six people. People are going to try and stop you or just run,
It is quite impossible to go nuts and smash twenty six people's heads in with a rock at one time.

I have no doubt makeing a bomb is simple, but not as simple as picking up a gun.

And smuggling it into a school, is another thing,

And I believe the powers that be south of the border are on a watch for the purchase of large amounts of chemicals needed for making a bomb. After the first world trade center bombing and the Oklamhoma city bombing it is hard o stock pile large amounts of the chemicals necessary to make a big bomb,
so yeah you could make a small bomb, but smuggling it into a class room,

It is not impossbible but really, its pretty simple to pull a trigger, compared to making a bomb and delivering it.

And your chances or you odds of success really go down.

I first shot a 22 rifle when I was seven years old. Our neighbour behind us was big into guns and hunting. He would take me out for the day and teach me safety and how to handle the gun. I have in the past number of years gone with another neighbour to ranges for target shooting but have never followed through with getting all the courses and licenses etc required. I have enough expensive hobbies besides this one ;) already. I really don't want to start throwing more money at hobby like guns. Women, cars and another couple of expensive hobbies are keeping me well entertained. :thumb:

On this recent tragedy in Connecticut, it was clear that the murderer has been mentally ill for years and had a mother who thought his use of guns would be a good hobby for him. This is probably one of the dumbest things I have ever heard reported. Sure the USA has to reign in the NRA and a good place to start is a mental assessment of the person applying for a gun license.

I used to be into target rifle shooting when I was in the cadet force. I was a marksmen in .303 and .202 rifles (circa second world war British army surplus). Target shooting is a rather solitary sport, perfect for individuals who are not comfortable around other people or choose to be. In other words, a lot of loners are drawn to the sport in addition to the "normal" people. In this case, I think the mother was so desperate to find common ground and communication with her son that she never even thought of the danger she is exposing everyone to. And she paid the ultimate price for it. Sad all around...

Very true. The best marksman I can remember ever meeting was very quiet unassuming person all with a Military background and preferred solitude over being with the mates. We would go on cross country ski trips together and he would only talk about skiing and not his former career in the Military for obvious reasons.

The staff sergeant who taught me everything I know about shooting was a sniper in a light infantry unit in the second world war. He refuse to talk about his time in the war and when pressed to reveal his number of kills, all he would say was "more than you can count on both hands". To this day, I still remember him giving us shit for the way we hold our cigarettes with the cherry facing the open air. Apparently, that's how they picked people off at night.

well let me rephrase that then

jim jones caused the death of 914 people, not one of them was shot

my point is, psychopaths will find a way. but i will concede that your average crazy can do more killing with an assault rifle in a shorter period of time with lesser training and a smaller outlay of energy than almost any other way short of explosives

I own several airsoft rifles. Those are dangerous enough, please and thanks. I will NEVER allow a real firearm to enter my household, unless it's on the hip of a police officer (of course).

I have lots of rifles, from a .22 pellet air rifle to a .375 H & H and most in between. They're tools, toys and collectables. I enjoy them immensely. Leave them and me alone. Thank you.

I have a truly honest question about something which I have no understanding.

What is it about guns that you enjoy immensely?

I really would appreciate a full and honest answer.

There will be no reply from me to your answer, just simple acceptance that your answer is how you see it and feel it.

You would be a best candidate perhaps to please explain it to me and others like me.

if i may

a good shot at the range, a perfect bulls eye, and especially one right after the other, is just like hitting a home run in baseball or a hole in one at golf, a hat trick in hockey or an ace in tennis - the satisfaction that all that practice has paid off in being able to do something out of the ordinary

collectables, especially family heirlooms, gives a sense of continuity of the generations - i'm handling the firearm my father handled, and treating it with the same respect and expertise that he did

for protection, almost every year somebody in canada dies or gets seriously fucked up from predatory animal attack. with a suitable firearm, the bearer will always have the choice as to the final outcome of an encounter. predators read that confidence in your body language and leave you alone, they can sense that this is no victim

carry on sir jim

I gotta agree with Sonny on this one - the way Jim worded his post was just plain creepy... Like Unabomber level creepy....

If this is your concern....do you actually have an earthquake plan?

The reason I ask, is I have a buddy that owns guns for the same reason....protecting his property if we are without power for a long time, with no food or water.

Yet, he never has more than a weeks worth of food, and his toilet is his only source of water.

Maybe that's his plan.

It just seems strange spend a few hundreds on a gun to protect a bottle of ketchup and a half empty 2-litre of pepsi.

I guess the best idea would be to wait till they come to rob you, then show them your gun and join up with them.

I have 2 Mossberg 500 Tactical Tri-Rail shotguns and 1 M16A1 Carbine.

I have had them for about 5 years. To be honest if I knew how to git rid of them forever I would.
that's easy - take them to a gunsmith and pay him to render them useless with a welding torch. then give them to the rcmp for disposal
