I find it incredibly amusing how many people who play the casino table games and slots (that's all casino games with the exception of poker) have little to no understanding at all about how probability and statistics work, how these games are set up so that the odds are always in favour of the house and against the player (yes, that means that over a lengthy enough sample size, players on average will lose more money than they win over time), and how few of these people actually understand that they do not have enough control over anything in their game to make the odds in their favour (all a great table game player can do is mitigate the odds so that they can keep the odds the house enjoys to a minimum).
Do most of you realize that you have no control over the outcome of most of your games. If you happen to win its just because of dumb luck - not because of some special system you did or formula you run. Its not because "the previous XX number of spins hit black so now the odds must be in favour hitting red" (because odds don't work that way), its not because the patterns on the baccarat board favour any specific outcome more than any other etc. etc. etc. Most people do not understand that you might be the best blackjack player who ever lived, and, unless you're able to count cards, you are more likely to lose than win because of how the house odds are stacked against you.
Now if you play poker, you have far more control over the outcome and your earning potential because you're not playing against the house - you're playing against other players and because it is a game of skill (with an element of luck to consider) rather than being a complete game of chance like all the other table games. That said, most players still don't win over the long run...its estimated that about 10% of all players (the very, very good players) will consistently win money over the long haul - the rest lose. Of the rest there are a large number of good players (maybe 50% in a poker room who regularly play) where over the long run they ultimately end up passing money back and forth against other good regular players but end up on the negative side of the ledger because of the rake (casino commission). Of course the bad players get feasted upon and stand no chance when they come in. They have to take their lumps until they figure out the game.
In poker, a great player can anticipate and assume his skill will earn him good money. The same cannot be said about any of the table games or slots.
