Does a dog's love transcend a human's?

Is there any human relationship that compares to the loyalty and affection a dog provides?

There is love and affection with humans, but after abut five years, it starts to wane. For a dog, the relationship to its humans is life-long.

Perhaps we've done a more effective job of selective breeding of dogs than we have of selective breeding of humans.

People treat their pets better than most humans....

They feed them, groom them, how many humans do you see doing that to complete strangers? If you have friends that have pets; how often do you pet them etc...With cats its almost as if they are the masters not the humans....

I’ll say when I’m walking my dog, conversations with strangers are easy. Especially with younger women, she draws them in like crazy. She’s my perfect wingman and is a fav with a few escorts. They’re disappointed when I don’t bring her.

On my own, I’m just a creepy white guy trying to make small talk with young women :pound:

Yes, the dog is a tremendous social lubricant. Numerous conversations start with "Oh, what a cute dog!" Many times I've seen someone looking rather glum and lonely. Their face lights up and they become animated when they spot the dog. She goes in for a lick and a pet, and it makes the person's day.

I'm always surprised at how many people we meet are keen for a slobbery lick on the face. By the dog, I mean.

Most that have come to house have probably met my George. He often makes a nervous first timer feel welcomed and takes the edge off. Loves to great everyone after they arrive and a hug and smile goodbye as they leave.

Whats not to love. Always a topic of conversation when I go out. He is my guy magnet lol.

I wish I was allowed dogs in my building , I prefer their company over humans anyday. Loyalty is the key factor

For sure owners of dogs like me can get over a divorce or a relationship but not having a dog for me would be a lot tougher to handle.

When I moved last year, I found the ideal place but no dogs allowed. When I went to sign my lease, I brought my dog and their dog immediately took a liking to her. They relented on the rule and it’s been happy ever after since. Seemed odd they had that rule but owned a dog. Now the dogs play in the yard.

I owned a dog when I was a teen and that was it. Even now I would love to own a dog but I know realistically that we are just too busy to take care of one. All of our dog owning friends advice against it simply because of the commitment that it requires.

Otherwise, I think a dog's love for its owner is unconditional and dogs are sincere and faithful.

My guy does same thing...draws in the women...usually tries to eat the boy friends if they happen to have one along. He's gotten better, but I better hope I never run into a female serial killer..he'd be useless...

....and ditto on the creepy white guy....except I get to add old to the title....:biggrin1:

Yeah, me too, but when I have the dog with me I get a pass and become someone people want to stop and chat with. It's amazing. I can be out in the bush wearing ragged clothing with grey stubble on my face . Normally people encountering an old guy in the bush looking like that will treat me warily. But, if I have the dog with me, people want to say hello and be friendly, if only so that they can meet the dog.

Maybe there should be therapy dogs at the UN?

Damn. This thread makes me miss my dog. Had a west highland terrier for 12 years. Awesome little guy, very friendly and out-going, curious little fella.

Loved my dog more than some of my ex partners to be honest
Same. My dog of 13 years passed away and I mourned her more than my breakup... I waited 2 yrs to get another and I have to say, she brings me so much joy. Amazing really, these furry pals.

I had a German Rottweiler that was enormous....you know a " back of the truck " kinda dog.
Good natured, but fiercely loyal too the core.
That damn dog layed his life down for me in a bear charge.
He had plenty of chance to get away, but wouldn't stop the battle, even when mortally wounded.

I'm not ashamed to say it still brings a tear to my eye when I think of it.
He died like a soldier defending his best friend.

All world leaders should have to have a dog ... I wonder what kind of dog each would be suited to???? Boris Johnson and long haired retriever that has just rolled in the park?

One of you guys posted something about this a few years ago that stuck in my brain.

Something to the fact of. “ If you throw your dog in the trunk and took him for a joy ride, he’d still be happy to see you when let him out. Throw the girlfriend/wife Ect. Not quite the same result “

And you can loop hole building restrictions with registering the pet as an emotional support animal. Just get a doctors note & then register them. You don’t have to declare them. After the fact if they get pissy. It’s straight to court for discrimination. I know someone who did it and won. Not me. But a close friend
