a question i would like answered,i have type 2 diabetes i always play safe,but i did end up with a urinary tract infection after doing a BBBJ! this was a first for me! am i particularly at risk doing this type of activity with my medical condition? thanks in advance! map47

I have spoken to our clinic doctor’s about this and they believe that your type 2 diabetes would not place you at additional risk.
Diabetes is a risk factor for UTI in women, but it looks like this has not been studied in men.
The other thing to clarify is about urinary tract infections (UTI). UTI can be serious infections and are much more common in woman than men. They usually involve the bladder or the kidneys.
Most men we see in our clinics have urethritis (infection of the urethra) which is most commonly caused by sexually transmitted bacteria. The symptoms can be similar between urethritis and bladder infections such as pain during urination (peeing).
The reason I believe many men get diagnosed with UTI from their doctors is because they do not tell their doctor about the different types of sex they are having. I know that this can be a difficult thing to bring up with some health care professionals especially if they see other family members.
If you are unable to discuss your sex life with your family doctor and you get symptoms such as painful urination or discharge I would suggest that you visit an STI clinic first. We would do all the testing and offer treatment. If after this the symptoms remained you would be able to go back and see your family doctor knowing that it probably wasn’t an STI causing the problem.
