I just finished Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. I liked it but, damn, she was the queen of long pages of descriptions! I don't think that any publisher today would accept to publish it in its full version if it were from a new author. They would cut and cut pages! Next readings are some cozy mysteries and books about philosophy.

I work in cancer research. So it was particularly interesting to me. I loved it. This is why we should never judge a book by its cover. ;)

Lavinia -- I was looking for a summer read and a physician friend recommended "Emperor of All Maladies."
I said a thick book on cancer seemed like a real downer.
"Trust me. This is a fantastic book," he said.
He was right. A bunch of amazing characters in a readable history about discovery and various treatments of the disease over the years. It's been a few years since I read it. I'm going to reread.

As to right now: "In the Woods" by Tana French. Scary detective novel set in Dublin.

For the book Emperor of all Maladies there was an 2 part documentary done on it. I keep thinking about Bones' comment in the The Search for Spock- "Barbarians.."

Currently reading Mathias Enard's

If the first 90 pages of this amazing novel is any indication of this french author's other works then consider me a fan.
He certainly seems to so far live up to all the accolades he has been receiving.

Edit: I've just purchased his 2017 novel Compass from Amazon.ca. :)

Try "Doughnut Economics," by Kate Rayworth. It is a very readable self-help book for the planet.

I don't read as many books as I used to due to my failing eyesight.
But right now I'm reading: "Masturbation causes Blindness" by Andy (Handy) Strokes.
I'm starting to understand the problem with my eyesight, because ....
When I was young and in my prime,
I used to jerk off all the time.
But now that I am old and grey,
I only jerk off once a day.

In Your Wildest Dreams!
I read a lot of nonfiction, most of it militaria or modern history. I just picked a book up today that I bought a while ago, but hadn't started reading yet. It's the book that the movie '12 Strong' was based upon. The book was originally published as "Horse Soldiers" but that's a Steve McQueen movie, so...It's set in a hot dusty place where a lot of good men I've had the pleasure to meet fought, immediately after September 11.

I was given the same novel by a friend....I've never read it either, for reasons that may be obvious to you.
Perhaps it's time.....

Modern Whore

It just arrived this afternoon and I can't stop reading it.

Funny, sad, scary and thought provoking.

Written by Andrea Werhun a former Toronto Escort. She's got some mad writing skills!

I am currently reading Stephen King's new novel, "The Outsider". I do long distance walking, so am also listening to it on audiobook. I'm about halfway through it and it's been pretty good so far. It's about a guy who is accused of a murder, and there's a ton of evidence connecting him to it, but also evidence to support his alibi. I think I'm at the point where things veer into the supernatural realm, similar to what happened in "Bag of Bones".
