BJH, if you seem to hit the wall or headboard most of the time, it may help to gauge the strength and volume of your ejaculation to get a sense of a range of distance that is possible. For example, if you have a larger penis and/or a stronger prostate, you might wish to take a step back or two before firing. Also, there are external factors, such as squeezing your glans immediately prior to ejaculating, that can affect the distance.

As for avoiding eye/nose/mouth/hair contacts, one might try:
-safety goggles;
-masks that cover the mouth and nostrils;
-nose plugs;
-bathing cap.

Or if the semen is healthy, try
-closing the eyes;
-squeezing the nose;
-closing the mouth;
-rather than shooting from the chin towards the forehead, position oneself so that the semen is shot onto the face (as one other poster pointed out), or from the side, or from the forehead towards the chin. All of these arrangements reduce the possibility of getting semen into eyes/nose/mouth.
