Just saw an ad for some cologne, showing Johnny Depp looking weird (as usual), driving an old muscle car into the desert to bury a necklace.

I thought, "Why would anyone buy that because of that ad?"

Do celebrity endorsements work on you?

Have any of you bought anything because some cleebrity pitches it?

Well, we take scientific advice from movie actors selling climate change. We take political advice from entertainers selling indigenous rights. At least there's a remote chance that a sports figure selling sports gear might have some knowledge of what he/she is flogging.

I started using Shell V Power in my Harley after meeting Willie Davidson at a Shell station.
He is pretty qualified as opposed to just a celebrity.

I would never use anything because of a celebrity endorsement, that's stupid.
What if Depp's perfume stinks?
Advice from friends who use stuff I am interested in is okay.
I would take a tradesman's advice regarding a Milwaukee drill over some actor's.

I’ll be surprised if anyone pipes in to admit “oh yeah, I always buy something that a celebrity has endorsed, no questions asked!”

But I’m sure it must have some positive business effect. If only to have people pay attention to a product and look into it more. Sadly, I think there are many people who DO trust celebrities’ endorsements. I remember old commercials with Wilford Brimley pushing Liberty Mutual. He comes across as a very trusting person, pushing a product for elderly. I’ve no doubt people picked up the phone just because of his spiel.

yes, the george foreman grill is one of the most successful spoke's person sold products

think salton have sold over 100 million grills

consumer product merchandising is not an intellectual or logical thing, they say the motive to buy is 70% emotional 30% logical

If celebrity endorsement & advertising interests you, perhaps you might want to check out a new thing called "Influencer Marketing"

It's like celebrity endorsement, but instead with everyday people. Basically, companies recognized that celebrity endorsement had lost it's lustre, so they came up with the bright idea of paying regular folk with a large social media presences a few bucks each rather than giving one celeb a few mil. You download an app and then they inspect your social media profiles, and if you have enough chumps on your friends' list, they'll give you a few sheckles each time you post a picture on instagram drinking a Pepsi or whatever. Very clever, and insidious, IMO. Kind of like Avon or Amway, except the only thing you sell is your soul. It's been a major disruption in advertising and is growing at an extreme rate.

Holy shit this is depressing. Even the list of "stars" this woman and her ilk are being influenced by is fucking moronic. I have faint hope for our future...

I've read of this growing since blogs started to gain popularity. Ever wonder how bloggers make a living from just, you know, typing some witty observations of their day? Advertisers (both those with ads, and those that provide products for the blogger to use and write about). I've seen some bloggers that will give SOME info on how they got the product, but have also seen some with no verbage on how they got the product, only that its GREAT and SO AWESOME and CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT!!!!111

Less obvious but no less insidious are paid reviews. Not sure the stats, but have seen some coverage of this phenomena. In one article, its a starred-reviewer on Amazon or similar site who is paid to 'review' another product. Since they've already reviewed hundreds of things (who has the money and time to review that many things? Probably a warning flag right thar...), someone can easily assume they're a trustworthy soul and purchase the product.

A warning sign to me are over-the-top reviews with nary a negative note to be seen. Good example is the Instant Pot. You read some reviews and it sounds like an Instant Pot is ALL you need for a lifetime (extended to 150+ yrs now) of bliss, ease, and happiness. Over 90% of the reviews are 5-star. I'm sorry, but nothing's THAT good.

right here and now
I would consider a celeb endorsed product if I felt that said celeb had experience with it or knew their shit.
Otherwise, I trust my own research to give me the goods to make an informed decision.
Cologne? fuck- I'll ask the person who likely will have to deal with it the most- namely my SO. Other than that a fragrance is just another stench for the public to have to deal with.
Video games?- nope, not my thing- and Kate Upton's overflowing bustier won't get me on board, either. (but nice rack, right?!)
Cars? sure- Matty Mac will be the deciding factor on whether a Lincoln is right for me!

He alone would be reason enough for me NOT to be interested in a Lincoln. Creepy guy.
