First off, I want to say that we live in the best country in the world, and I could be the single biggest flagwaver in this country, BUT,

one of the pet peeves I have is too many Canadians because of their birthright think that they are experts about hockey.. Guys like BJ and hunny are two shining examples, but there are quite a few more here on Perb.

Although I never got around to posting before the Olympics, I was telling anyyone who would listen that Canada was going to win the Gold. Quite simply, this is the best hockey team ever assembled.
Even better than the 1977 Stanley Cup champs Montreal Canadians who only lost 8 games during the regular season, and averaged 2.5 more goals per game than their opposition. The combination of size, speed, skill, hockey IQ, coaching and management has in my opinion guaranteed the Gold.

Look at it this way. Out of lets say the best 6 teams at the Olympics, only 1, Canada, could win a Stanley Cup. All the other teams don't have the skill or depth to get the job done.

When so many people were worried about the Russians, I was laughing to myself. Yes, they have 6 great forwards, no one can argue there, but, 8 KHL players on the team. Could you imagine Team Canada with 8 AHL players.

The American team while they have been outstanding in this tourny, are not in the same league as Canada. Now with that being said, anything can happen in a single game, but in a 7 game series, it wouldn't be close. Too bad we will never have the opportunity to watch something like that.

In closing, I did want to add one thing. Aside from all the great things that have been going on in Vancouver since the Olympics began, and even above and beyond the medals Canada has won, for me the best thing about these Olympics is the fact that during this time frame we have all been Canadians, not hyphenated Canadians, ie English Canadian, French Canadian, Chinese Canadian etc.

This certainly has been the biggest lovefest for Canada since 1967. For all you youngens out there, that was Canada Centenial year. Does anyone remember

Canada 1, 2 3 little Canadians, we love you.

It's the 100th anniversary of Confederation, everybody sing together,

Canada, 1 2 3 little Canadians, we love you.

what a memory you have...
I remember that jingle now.
I would not have never recalled that
even if my life depended upon it.

Well those lyrics for the Centennial song are a little off--but I'm not going to quibble.

I'm no hockey expert. But it was a great game and it played out so perfectly.

In the last two weeks we got a storehouse of memories. I remember the Centennial--kids today will remember this moment. This is what gives us an identity.

I think Canada definitely picked up their game particularly after playing the Swiss. Overall it was a total team effort and they were the best team at the olympics. The US, however, deserve kudos as they were also very good and could have end up with the gold but for some last second heroics.

You're kidding, right?

Canada Cup 1987.

Gretzky - Lemieux - Messier - Anderson - Hawerchuk - Gilmour - Bourque - Coffey. Grant Fuhr, arguably one of the greatest money goalies of all time, in net.
A dozen Hall of Famers or about-to-be....all of them at, or almost at, the pinnacle of their careers.

BTW - for someone complaining about so-called 'hockey experts' you sure seem to be claiming to be one ;)

I really can't argue about your choice of the 87 Canada Cup team. I think a very strong case can be built for that team. Although it is not fair to compare different eras in hockey or for that matter any sport, I honestly think this version of Team Canada is the best. I say it because they are bigger, faster, stronger and I honestly think from top to bottom there isn't a weak link anywhere. Sure Brodeur might have aged quickly in this tourny, but having a guy like looie to come in carry the load shows how deep this team is.

As far as hall of famers are concerned, don't sell this team short. I am thinking that when all is said and done, this team will have more than its fair share of HOFers.

And as far as thinking of myself as a hockey expert, I can't really respond to that statement. That statement is right up there with "have you stopped beating your wife" I was fortunate enough to play Jr, and collegiate hockey, and coached as well at a Midget AAA level, so while I don't want to sound conceited, but to sum it up I know my hockey.

Bart, I do have to compliment you on your comments regarding the forum troll you made on another thread.

I appreciate you keeping me on my toes.

you're kidding right:rolleyes:...

Grant Fuhr was a coke-head who was fortunate enough to play for a team that could score two or three goals for every goal he let in...

and don't give me the garbage that he made the big save when he had to...

why am I not surprised though...

this from a guy who thought Tiger Woods exuded class...
