First off, I want to say that we live in the best country in the world, and I could be the single biggest flagwaver in this country, BUT,
one of the pet peeves I have is too many Canadians because of their birthright think that they are experts about hockey.. Guys like BJ and hunny are two shining examples, but there are quite a few more here on Perb.
Although I never got around to posting before the Olympics, I was telling anyyone who would listen that Canada was going to win the Gold. Quite simply, this is the best hockey team ever assembled.
Even better than the 1977 Stanley Cup champs Montreal Canadians who only lost 8 games during the regular season, and averaged 2.5 more goals per game than their opposition. The combination of size, speed, skill, hockey IQ, coaching and management has in my opinion guaranteed the Gold.
Look at it this way. Out of lets say the best 6 teams at the Olympics, only 1, Canada, could win a Stanley Cup. All the other teams don't have the skill or depth to get the job done.
When so many people were worried about the Russians, I was laughing to myself. Yes, they have 6 great forwards, no one can argue there, but, 8 KHL players on the team. Could you imagine Team Canada with 8 AHL players.
The American team while they have been outstanding in this tourny, are not in the same league as Canada. Now with that being said, anything can happen in a single game, but in a 7 game series, it wouldn't be close. Too bad we will never have the opportunity to watch something like that.
In closing, I did want to add one thing. Aside from all the great things that have been going on in Vancouver since the Olympics began, and even above and beyond the medals Canada has won, for me the best thing about these Olympics is the fact that during this time frame we have all been Canadians, not hyphenated Canadians, ie English Canadian, French Canadian, Chinese Canadian etc.
This certainly has been the biggest lovefest for Canada since 1967. For all you youngens out there, that was Canada Centenial year. Does anyone remember
Canada 1, 2 3 little Canadians, we love you.
It's the 100th anniversary of Confederation, everybody sing together,
Canada, 1 2 3 little Canadians, we love you.
