"CDC advises Americans to don facemasks, though Trump says he won’t wear one...
Trump is such an idiot. Instead of undercutting the CDC'S recommendation minutes after it was announced, he could have supported them by showing leadership and putting on a Trump branded designer face covering at the press briefing. This would have shown leadership, and not to mention a great marketing opportunity. He could have launched a whole new line of Trump face covering merchandise (through his underlings of course).

Instead, he showed his callous attitude towards others. By the way, have you noticed how closely he packed his officials behind him in some of the COVID-19 press briefings? They were touching shoulder to shoulder.

LOL! My crystal ball just told me that if Trump whipped out his "mightily totally super effective Trump Industries face mask" during a press conference - you'd being complaining about how he was using an emergency to promote his business interests. But don't worry, someone (if they don't exist already) will start making/selling MAGA branded face masks on Ebay or Amazon. My crystal ball seems to think people will also complain about that. LOL!

Here's a crazy philosophical question: if MAGA branded N95 masks were the only N95 masks available, how many Trump haters would refuse to wear one? I pose this question jokingly. That said, I lament the fact that I truly believe there are people that would actually refuse to wear anything branded with MAGA - even during this emergency crisis. It truly is sad how one US election created so much, wackiness. But maybe the wackiness always existed, as I'm equally sure that some super devout religious people would refuse a rainbow coloured N95 mask as well.

True, and while there's no doubt Covid has become seriious, and seems to affect people of all ages differently, ther's also no doubt this disease is being used as a poltical weapon. Reporters asking questions not to get information, but to try to score political points.

CNN picking through every comment to find the ones they can show were wrong, or might be misstated, or will show things as the worst possible.

Politicians claiming everything is Trumps' fault, even when states fell short, or gave wrong advice.

And suddenly, "We all knew a pandemic was coming, and should have been prepared." Right - that's why we all had a year's supply of TP, food, medicines, prescriptions, entertainment, and face masks already stashed in our homes.

Face masks are a perfect example - started out nobody needed them, then they said the sick should use them, then ONLY the sick. Now, when there aren't masks available, "EVERYBODY should use them". And we should have known that in January.

And here is a perfect example. Ex Democrat Presidential candidate and mayor of New York Bill DiBlasio on March 10 dispensing advice on how to deal with the virus. This is just about the same time that the NBA, NHL and Tennis had shut down indefinitely.

The fact is that no one really knew what was going to happen no matter what they are saying now. In fact the most important thing to Democrats and the media back around the beginning of February if you recall was not the spread of the virus but what it was being called and accusing those of calling it the Wuhan virus and those who were reluctant to attend scheduled Chinese New Year events racist. You could also say that DiBlasio's reluctance to meet the virus head on when he had the opportunity as indicated in the video contributed greatly to the fact that New York city has had over 3500 deaths in the last 3 weeks. Will he be held responsible? Well, 10 days later he was blaming Trump for inaction when it is very clear from the video that he was just as unprepared if not more so.
While Trump has not exactly been a shining beacon of light during this crisis, neither have his political and media adversaries.

Note that the CDC doesn't actually refer to them as masks...they call it cloth face covers...

I believe the CDC would fully recommend masks if they were actually available
There are tons of masks for sale online, even KN95's which have been considered as effective as K95 masks:

https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=kn95&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

Their price is several times higher than a year ago & some articles consider them "disposable". If they are only good for one use on one day, it could get quite expensive for the average person using them daily at $2- $40 each.

OTOH, as i've posted earlier in this thread, there are alternative masks/shields that allegedly offer varying degrees of protection, even up to that of the K's & that are reusable indefinitely at a fraction of the cost, even make-able from materials people have around their homes.

I did notice that.

BTW, for those who want a Trump mask:

Or, better yet,Trump toilet paper:

I have dozens and dozens of cases of the masks. When i heard that they were in short supply I wrote an email to the four nearest hospitals to me offering them free of charge about 2/3 of the many thousands I had. Only 2 out of the 4 even replied, and they said no thanks. As I go through at least 6000 a year for work reasons, I had lots, especially after my January shipment of 8000 more came in, on top of the thousands that I already had.

Good on you for doing that. It's too bad health care policy gets in the way of common sense sometimes.

"Tam offers new advice: wear a non-medical mask when shopping or using public transit

Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer has new advice for Canadians: wear a non-medical face mask to help cut down the spread of the novel coronavirus when they are in situations where they can’t ensure proper physical distance from strangers.

Dr. Theresa Tam said this would help in scenarios such as shopping in the grocery store or riding public transit.

“Canadians can take this additional measure [in] instances where social distancing is difficult to maintain,” she told a noon briefing in Ottawa Monday.

Dr. Tam offered advice on how to make a non-medical mask, saying Canadians could use a cotton shirt for instance, combined with rubber bands.

“We’re talking about things that are readily available in people’s homes,” she said. “Things like cotton shirts, sheets, bandanas.”

“If you can get a cotton material like a T-shirt, you cut it up, you fold it and put elastic bands around it – this is a non-medical facial covering.”

Dr. Tam said this measure is now being advised to help cut down on transmission by Canadians who are infected by the virus but are asymptomatic or presymptomatic.

“Our collective scientific knowledge of COVID-19 continues to grow,” she said.

“It is clear that transmission of the virus is happening more often than previously recognized from infected people right before they develop symptoms,” she said. “This is called presymptomatic transmission.”

She said the same goes for people who never develop symptoms: the asymptomatic.

“A non-medical mask can reduce the chance of your respiratory droplets coming into contact with others or land[ing] on surfaces,” Dr. Tam said.

The announcement Monday represents a new decision from medical experts in Canada. Dr. Tam said the Special Advisory Committee – which includes her and provincial and territorial chief public health officers – made it together.

“With this emerging information, the special advisory committee on COVID-19 has come to a consensus that wearing a non-medical mask, even if you have no symptoms, is an additional measure that you can take to protect others around you in situations where physical distancing is difficult to maintain.”

Public health officials were pressed Monday to explain why they’re only advising these makeshift masks now, a number of weeks after Canada began fighting the pandemic.

Dr. Tam said the evidence about presymptomatic and asymptomatic cases only accumulated in the last 10 days or so.

“These are very recent studies … so we very rapidly try to integrate that latest science,” she told reporters.

“Just before they develop symptoms, [people] have high viral loads,” she said. “And so that tells us the possibility is there they can transmit.”

Dr. Tam said public health officials in Canada still don’t know exactly how important transmission from presymptomatic or asymptomatic cases are driving this epidemic.

The Chief Public Health Officer emphasized this new advice does not confer better protection on the mask user, but is recommended to protect others.

She said this advice is a “permissive statement” offered to help reduce transmission and does not constitute an official recommendation.

The Chief Public Health Officer said as of Monday morning there were 15,822 COVID-19 cases in Canada and 293 deaths.

She said “most concerning” are the new outbreaks in hospitals and long-term care facilities in several provinces.

“As well, we are hearing of young people being hospitalized due to COVID-19 and people as young as in their 20s dying of the disease,” she said.

Dr. Tam urged Canadians not to turn to medical masks for this preventive measure recommended Monday.

More than 339,000 people in Canada have been tested to date with about 5 per cent confirmed as positive, she said Monday.
