There's little markup in laptops unless you opt for an unused but older model. Just watch the sales including those from Future Shop, Best Buy, and Dell. If you insist on windows, maybe you may wish to consider a MS Surface tablet.

I don't like tablet interfacing. I really am old-school and prefer a keyboard, or at least a keypad! I'd consider going back to Mac with a MacBook Pro if I could get one cheap enough.
Microsoft Surface has a keyboard as an add on, in fact all tablets do but Microsoft has a really good feel to it. If you're ever in Metrotown head into the mall onto the Microsoft store. Otherwise, Stooples has occasional deals.

MacBook Air refurbished through Apple.ca

Great deals and you won't have to replace your laptop every 3-4 years :p

I have networked a few for my biz and if all you need is basic word processing and email; you won't need to buy additional SW. I am still using a MacBook from Dec 2008. Longest lasting laptop I have owned. Toshiba, HP, Sony etc all crapped out in 2 - 3 yrs .

Are Macbooks still dual boot with Wiindows? I used to say to people only buy Apple computers f you have friends or colleagues who also have Apple. Personally, I love the look of the Apple PCs but I find them way overpriced, even used. I believe you are still forced to upgrade your PC due to software and hardware compatibility.

Windows operating on Macs: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1461?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

In my business, I am sending and receiving reports, Excel spreadsheets, Word Docx, Power Points etc etc and there has been zero incompatibility with PC''s even with engineering documents which for a long time were the domain of Windows. Many of my business associates are also switching to Mac's which is quite a change considering we work in an engineering environment.

For me the decision was a rather simple one to go from a PC environment to a Mac. I had four dead laptops in about 5 years. I am hardly the rough type and take care of my stuff. It was always some defect on the mother board or an issue with the power, lousy hard disks etc. I threw away an expensive (in its day) Toshiba, HP, Sony and even a Lenovo which was supposed to be the best of the best from the PC world. Thing is about the PC world is they are always killing each other to bring out the cheapest laptop. Very few will try to bring out the higher end laptop and I think Mac is after that niche in the marketplace.

Yes, you do pay more for Mac's. Like I said, I have purchased off their refurbished list usually at a 18 - 25% discount. They qualify for Apple care so I get a three year warranty from Apple. I think if you amortize your computer investments over say a five year period, you will see in the end you are not paying a lot more for Apple desktops or laptops. I have never had a hardware issue with any of my Apple products. Their achilles heel is the cables on power supplies and USB cables to lightning or thunderbolt. These are made very cheaply in China and do not stand up very well.

Really the question is am I getting good value for money buying from one of the PC manufacturers? Can I tolerate throwing away hardware every couple of years?

You touched on a good point: warranty. Apple Care is fantastic. That being said, you can also get 3 year extended warranties on Windows machines like Dell.

If anyone`s got a wholesale or discount connection that I can utilise to get a nice laptop at a low cost, I`d appreciate a PM! Thanks!:eyebrows:
Just bought a Lenovo at FS for my in-laws. Great value for $. Intel i5. They have a few really good deals on their refurbed units (another Lenovo with Touch screen, 10gb RAM and 1TB HD). Check their website but also make sure you check the processor. While I have traditionally been okay with AMD CPU's, the newer i3 and i5 series from Intel are better (IMO YMMV).

In Your Wildest Dreams!
Much to my surprise....I bought an all in one desktop that is lightweight enough to carry easily around the house...say, from the living room couch where I am sitting now up the stairs to my boudoir so I can now have appropriate music streaming for you! No more crappy clock radio sound! The new Windows 8 is really easy to learn, but this new Multilingual Windows Keyboard has some extra keys I keep hitting by mistake! At least now I should be able to figure out how to type properly in French! :D

Uhhhh, there are easier ways to (ditch the clock radio and) get music into your boudoir, but I'm glad you've come up with a solution you're happy with!

I've been Mac since 1985 (yeah, really). Unfortunately, they don't always last that long. Had a MacBook back in 2007 that died after 15 months (motherboard went), and the MacBook Air I bought for my SO developed major screen-problems after about 15 months. So, their reliability isn't what it used to be. And of course I didn't have the extended warranty on either given the track record of trouble free heavy use I've experienced in the past. But, I don't think that is the norm. Yes, most Apple products do last for years and so the higher cost upfront is pay off. The replacement MacBook I bought in 2007 is still running.
