So if you read a book that you think everyone should read.

Energy and Civilization- A History- Vaclav Smil -- University of Manitoba. Prime movers from people, animals, waterwheels and turbines, windmills, steam Engines, steam turbines, Internal combustion engines. From walking, coaches, ships, trains, airplanes.

Eric H. Cline-- 1177; After 1177; Three Stones make a Wall (about Archaeology). The 1177 books are about the fall of the late bronze age Civilizations and the beginning of the Iron Age.

Doom- The politics of Catastrophe- Niall Ferguson. Disasters from earthquakes to volcanoes, wars, to plagues. Using economics, cliodynamics, network science for explanations. And why the fuck we as a western world are failing to help in times of crisis.

Graham Hancock. Any. For the guys that think modern archealogy hasn't gone far enough... In his books he present facts found by other people who modern archealogists disagrees with, or have hard time with the facts they present. So Hancock presents them.

I like science fiction/fantasy books, and I like Roman history too.

Does any one know a good torrent site that replaces the Z-library that got shut down a few years ago?

Should read it. I read one day in the life of Ivan Desinovitch. I had just been working for brick layers a short while before, in Calgary, when I was young. Reminded me of that. lol.

Most books could only be considered essential reading when the book serves a individuals purpose.
All books are essential for their own reasons; This is why so many have been published.
My own book shelves, are home to thousands of books.

Most novels are essential much like movies are essential, they are entertainment.
Spiritual books are essential when somebody is ready for, or looking for, spiritual enlightenment .
Self help books are essential if somebody feels they need some form of improvement. IMHO these books only help us to realize that perhaps we didn't need any help to begin with.
The most essential are instructional books, from biology to physics, from medical journals to vehicle service manuals. These are the books that hold all of the truly important content required for our civilization to function from day to day, but all too specific to recommend as essential reading.

All books are essential!!

Those book manuals are now on youtube, lot easier to watch a video, see, hear, and learn... key in a few word for searching and presto....

If you enjoy a little comedy in your sci-fi, you might try a littly Harry Harrison. The stainless steel rat series is still a humorous read with lots of galaxy hopping (as a reader, I am a total slutty-slut for galaxy hopping), but also has good guys turned bad and bad guys turned good, and all that.

if you liked Hitchikers, you might enjoy a little Spider Robonson—Callahan’s Cross Time Saloon series.

I did all the Big Name classics, but prefer the intrigue of the lesser known gems. A few did one or two amazing novels and them poof. Will have to look those up—they still impact to this day.

Anything from Arthur C Clark, read 2001 a space odyssey when I was a kid and I was a fan right away. Personal favourite was Rendezvous with Rama which is being made into a movie, looking forward to seeing it!

If you enjoyed the Stainless Steel Rat I would recommend. The Long Run by Daniel Keys Moran.
