Blu Ray Player Recommendations

OK after venturing into Best Buy last week for the first time in months, I noticed that the DVD section was now almost 50% Blu Ray. That got me thinking that it was now probably time to get a new Blu Ray DVD player.

Two years ago I almost took the plunge to get a Blue Ray player. At the time, Blu Ray had just beat out HD. However, prices were still a bit high for my liking.

Last year when I went to Future Shop, one of the sales people mentioned that if I were to get a Blu Ray player, he recommended me getting a PS3 as that was the best bang for your dollar in terms of overall value. As a Blu Ray player it was not too bad of a player i.e., better than your low end Blu Ray players.

So now we are nearing the end of 2009, what do you guys recommend in terms of Blu Ray players?

Should I get a PS 3 even though I am not much of a gamer. I have a Nintendo Wii and that's enough for me. The only high power game I like out there is HALO and that's on XBox and I have no plans to get an XBox.

But back to Blu Ray players. If not an PS 3, then what kind of standalone Blu Ray players do you guys recommend? Note: I am not a fan of Korean products so please do not recommend any of those.

Anyway, your Blu Ray recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

PS3. Plays the movies great, and what I really like is you can stream video and music files stored on your pc to watch/listen to on your hometheater. Great stuff. I was out of gaming for years, but Rockband changed all that.

If you want a really good blu-ray player, check out the Oppo BDP-83.http://reviews.cnet.com/blu-ray-dvd-players/?tag=centerColumnArea1.0 It up-converts DVDs really well and plays even more formats than the PS 3 and loads fast.

The only down side I can see is the $530 price tag via internet but it does come with a decent HDMI cable and a calibration disc worth a few bucks.

Mine is on order already!

Cheers! WS.

you may want it to match your tv

also, blu rays need 'software" updates to play newer movies with updated encryption protection....they don't tell you that when you are buying the machine....

to echo everyone else...go with the PS3 the new slimline model just came out and its only $299.00,

the PS3 has built in wi-fi and will perform all your software updates through their PS3 network (which is free, unlike xbox live)

do you get your content off the net? mininova.org, etc? the ps3 will play your burned dvd's with no problem.

also watch for netflix to land with PS3 shortly. this means you will be able to download/stream your movies directly from netflix. now if you ask me this is HUGE, at the moment netflix is pretty much an online blockbuster video. but with their foray into streaming movies to your TV via PS3 or XBOX live this will eventually pave the way to watching first run movies from the comfort of your own home. imagine watching the iron man sequel (for example) from your couch the same day it lands in theaters.

PS3 all the way

Thanks guys. I guess I'll be getting a PS3 this week along with the new Star Trek Blu Ray DVD.
