Went shopping on the weekend; some places had up to 50% off , but most had 20-30% off. Now if this is the time most retailers are making their money during the year and they are still making a good profit at 20-30% off prices. Tells me that everything is over priced by alot.....

Amazon and ebay are online stores, with a few warehouses that ship everything off, saving them a bundle of money, hence cheaper prices...

Every notice that sometimes the the price online is very close to the one in the store??

There were a few websites I went to that claimed e.g. 40% off but the "sale" price was their regular price from last month and the crossed out regular price was artificially inflated.

I laugh at this 50, 60, 70% off!!!! Bull Fucking Shit!

Do you, really, in your right mind, believe that they are selling it that low? A retailer never sells it for a loss. Like NEVER. I know someone who works for a mid-sized retailer and after a drink or two it is not too hard to get it out of him.

Basically, retailers have a bottom line, they mark things up many fold and then they drop it. So drop in price basically means the retailer is making only say about 50% instead of 75%.

If you don't believe me, keep a record of prices on a few things. You think they are cheap on special days like (Canadian) black friday or Boxing Day? Think again. Based on my observation, it is cheaper AFTER xmas and boxing day because retailers don't want to spend time and money on transporting stuff between outlets and warehouses. And guess what, you are still paying way above their cost.

Happy Shopping.

Worst thing I have ever seen....an act of TOTAL hypocracy

When I lived in North Vancouver way back in 1996 I decided to hit the A&B Sound Boxing Day Sale.I had $200 to blow on stuff on sale.I went through the line and got into the store and it was pretty crazy.
People grabbing anything and everything but no violence or anything of that nature.

As I am making my way through the chaos I damn near got my ankles trimmed by a 6 foot long flat deck four wheeler used in the loading dock.It was stacked to the rafters.A couple of televsions which back then were tube TV's that at say maybe 27 inches weighed 150 pounds.Add in a couple of stereo systems as well as a SHITLOAD of CD's.Not to mention other stuff like cordless phones/microwave etc.In the middle of this madness I damn near got my ankles trimmed by a monsterous four wheel flatdeck laden with the fruits of consumerism and wesrtern society and it was the cart of David Suzuki. It was pushed by an A&AB Sound employee who who acted like an ass kissing sycophant "yes Sir Mr Suzuki" at every barked word every time. The A&B guy was just grabbing everything told to him as in grab that!...grab that!....get 3 of this!.....get 4 of that!.....so on and so forth. After David Suzuki does his "shopping" the store kisses his ass further by opening up a register for him.

Retailers don't mark up by "many times" - usually it's 100%.

So if something cost $50 to them, the price is going to be $100. It's such a standard practice that it even has a name: keystoning. Of course, this is the general practice. Can vary by industry or location.

I find that smaller retailers are more aggressive about cutting prices off old inventory, since anything is better than nothing. Picked up an old-stock jacket for US$109 when the suggested retail was $750.

Except for the loss leaders to sucker you in the door, and crap retailers want off the floor anyway, almost every Black Friday or Boxing Day (now Boxing Week) price can be had any time by bargaining, or waiting. Just over-hyped stupidity that we've now imported from the US.

The thing with buying online is bad pictures, from not enough angles, relative size (put ruler in picture). Also details - even big stores don't have the detail on their products. If I want to buy a backpacking tent, weight, length, height, material, 1 door or 2 door, etc the more info I have the better I can make a decision.

Also condition of packaging tells how product was treated by company...

Usually clothes- have to try on... manufacturers have slightly different sizes.

In general, I find discounts in the US to be valid. It's in Canada where we hike the prices and then drop them on shopping day.

A few years ago my company was negotiating with the Hudsons Bay to carry a high end line of golf wear we were distributing. At the time the line was very exclusive and not available in traditional retail. Our policy was standard markup and no sales were permitted to maintain the brands status. They insisted that not only did they have the right to put it on sale they had to price it at a high enough level to enable a 30% margin when it was on onsale at 50% off.
Needless to say they did not get the line.
Never ever pay full price at the Bay.

No need to wait for Black Friday deals. If you are looking for quality name brand deals, check out thelasthunt

All name brands, not factory seconds and they are end of the production run products. They ship via Canada Post, so it's best to wait a bit.

I've dealt with them for a while now. Just know your correct size with each manufacturer since they don't take returns.

The thing with online shopping though cheaper, you really have to do your homework.

1. Have to keep checking the site
2. Check size (each manufacturer is slightly different for shoes, boots, clothes etc); especially width of feet, most manufactures only go to W (2E).
3. Material (to avoid the gortex logo, alot of manufacturers have instituted their own way of wicking moisture away from body)
4. Comparison shop. Unfortuneately big outlets usually get the 00989 wetsuit , while the other one gets the ZZDET wetsuit, which is exactly the same thing. (I believe that this is to cut down on the match or beat prices of some retail stores).

I like the last hunt.
