Jesus, just heard about it.

Not really sure who was behind it, but first off, I'd expect martial law, then probably a rather nasty civil war.

Hope to hell I am wrong.

Pakistan is such a politically volatile country. This will not be good at all. I would expect rioting and more killing. Very sad as she was certainly a stabilizing influence!:(

This comes as no surprise to anyone following recent events in Pakistan.

On Oct. 18th as Bhutto's motorcade convoy was driving down a main road in Karachi two bombs were detonated one, the act of a suicide bomber on foot, threw a grenade to attract attention before setting off the second major blast.

The bomb detonated as Bhutto's motorcade was nearing the tomb of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who led Pakistan to independence and championed equal rights for all Pakistani citizens regardless of their religion. Bhutto had planned to stop and pray at the tomb, then deliver a speech to her supporters.

Bhutto attack - CNN

At least 50 of the jaanisars perished in the twin suicide bomber blasts unleashed, soon after midnight, on Bhutto’s slow-moving armoured truck. With a death toll of at least 140 dead and over 500 injured, the attack was one of the worst in Pakistan’s political history -- one that is peppered with mysterious, unresolved assassinations and bombings. Addressing a press conference at her residence on Friday, Bhutto attributed her near-miraculous escape to the courage of the janisaars who, after the first explosion, stood their ground and surrounded the truck, deflecting a direct hit by a second attacker.

Bhutto press conference - IPS

Bhutto was returning after a self imposed 8 year exile due to corruption charges brought against her after she was ousted from power in 1996 (none of these charges were proved in court).
Under the National Reconciliation Ordinance promulgated on Oct. 5, Pervez Musharraf, president and chief of army staff, gave Bhutto immunity against the charges and in return, her party, which is Pakistan’s biggest, would support his presidential bid.

I personally believe Bhutto was a person that would have led Pakistan in the right direction as President and the following statement I agree with;

"I don't think people realise this, but she was one of the last hopes we had in Pakistan for a peaceful transition to democracy," said Karachi-based economist Haris Gazdar, who supported Bhutto's much-criticised "deal" with the military government that allowed her to return to the country and participate in politics.

"The Americans think we are a dangerous state, and they want to come and sort things out here. This was our chance to do it peacefully," Gazdar told IPS. "Make no mistake about it, the state is responsible for her death. They may think that by removing the vehicle for a peaceful change, they can stop the change. But that will not happen. Now that the peaceful mediator has been killed, they (U.S.) will use armed force."

Those words are definately something to think about here.
