I love to barter for all kinds of goods and services! Take for instance the camera that I just purchased recently. It was listed for $879 and after checking it out thoroughly I asked the guy if he would accept $779? After a bit of mulling over on his part he agreed and I just saved $100. If I didn't ask I would have $100 less in my pocket :) What do you guys/ladies think?

that's quite the savings. good on you agentwhite.
curious, which camera did you buy as I'm a shutterbug myself.
ditching my Nikon dslr for a more compact variety.
narrowing it to three; Fuji X30, Sony A6000 and Ricoh GR

That's not bartering. Negotiating, bargaining, haggling - but not bartering. Bartering would have been you exchanging another object or a service of equal value to the camera instead of money.

I know people use barter in this context but imo they shouldn't as they are two very different types of transactions. ;)

Barter is a system of exchange by which goods or services are directly exchanged for other goods or services without using a medium of exchange, such as money.

There is a big difference between exchanging goods at wholesale to wholesale , or retail to retail prices....and grinding someone down on a price for goods or services.
Nothing pisses me off more when an agreement is made, and you shake someones hand...and they change the deal later on.
I used to honor the agreement anyways....But it started happening to me more often than I'd care to admit....So I swallowed my stupid Cowboy pride, forgot about the handshake deals, because the other parties were not honoring them anyway.......And wrote up a contract.
It then became a completeley different story when they tried to change it...I could just pull out a piece of paper that they had signed in good faith, and most often they would honor it.

I'm old fashioned and still like to consider a handshake with direct eye contact to be a binding agreement.

I'd shake your hand anytime cowboy. ;)

I am interested in buying some fabrics, but I need someone that speaks Punjabi/Hindi to go with me :(
Many of the store employees can manage to speak English fairly well.

Escapefromstress.........I'm sure you'd honor a deal made with a handshake....I figure that after an hour with you, my knees would shake like Jello as well...And I'd be fine with that.

In my business, I am forever negotiating with my clients. Both sides want to get the best possible deal and the goal at the end is a zero sum game where both sides walk away satisfied. I am upselling all the time and try to provide more of a value add to my clients to distinguish myself from other sales people who merely discount their product to bag an order. They are short sighted merely dropping their price whereas many of my clients will see that they actually get more for their money when they buy a package deal from me.

What you did was ask for a discount and unfortunately, the sales person just handed it to you. If you had shown up with an ad from a competitor showing a $100 price discrepancy, the discount would have been warranted. IMHO the sales rep should have stuck to his guns or asked you to purchase additional product to qualify for the $100 discount you requested.

Miss Bijou: Excellent and accurate response. Most pleasant experience with you was simply value received even though you kept me out in the rain.
